"Are you sure we don't need to pay, dad gave us enough." Meadow says as her, Sara and Rachel stand in front on the ice-cream bar looking at all the different flavours. We had been at the beach for an hour and a half and the the weather was only getting hotter as the day went on. The others had decided to swim out further and snorkel but Meadow and her friends wanted to get ice-cream so I offered to take them to a little cafe whilst they do that.
"Yes! Anything you want is on me." I say pushing them forward to choose their flavours as they were all apprehensive about doing so. They all begin discussing what flavours they're going to have and I silently laugh to myself as I watch them. Man I wish all I had to worry about these days was ice-cream flavours.
They all tell the old man what they want and then I tell him my order and we wait for him to make them.
"My dad likes you a lot by the way." Meadow says smiling up at me. I study her for a second wondering what she means.
"I like him too." I say honestly.
The man hands us all our individual ice-creams and I pay him the bill before we all head back to the beach.
"But I mean, A LOT..." She explains with emphasis on the last part. I frown as I eye her from the side. What, so he likes me like a friend or more? Meadow sighs. "He has a massive crush on you." I almost choke on my ice-cream. Crush? As if! Paul is way too good for me. He's a massive movie star, owns millions and has many expensive cars where as I'm an art student who is currently living on my life savings, which by the way is running out quickly and drive a crappy car that is on the verge of a breakdown.
"He has a crush, on me?" I say with disbelief as I emphasise the "me" part. Maybe Meadow has some kind of wicked plan of setting us up together without us realising.
"Yep." She nods like she knows for a fact. "He stares at you constantly... How can you not notice this?" She says pointing it out like it was the most obvious thing ever.
"I've never caught him staring at me." I laugh.
We get back to our spot on the beach and see the others coming out of the sea and walking back over.
"Those ice-creams look real good." Paul says as he sits down on his towel next to me.
"Here dad." Meadow reaches over to hand Paul the money he had given Meadow and her friends earlier to pay with.
"Who paid?" He asked as he took the money and counted it.
"Alena did." Meadow says smiling at me then getting up with Sara and Rachel to walk along the beach near the sea.
"How much did all of there's come to?" Paul asks me as he sits up from leaning back.
"What? No, don't worry about it. It wasn't much." I say shaking my head. He tried to hand me 15 dollars but I just pushed his hand back. "Honestly, it's fine! I owed her one for being behaved when I babysat her last week." He looked at me unsure. I smile reassuringly and he sighs putting the money in his wallet.
"Alright. Did she say thank you?"
"Yes Paul! Your daughter is very polite." I say matter of factly.
He laughs. "That's good to hear."
-
"No! It hit the net! You don't get a point for that!" Laura shouted at me and Paul as we high fives each other celebrating winning another point.
We were currently playing volleyball. Me and Paul were on one team and Laura and Jack were on the other.
"It still went over!" I shout back. I serve the ball and it goes high over the net onto the opposite side. Jack hits it back and me and Paul both end up going for it. Before I know it were both on the ground laughing hysterically as Laura and Jack rush over to help us up laughing also.
"You alright?" Paul asks grabbing hold of my arm gently. I freeze at the touch of his hand on my arm and get a warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. "Alena?" He asks, snapping me out of my daydream.
"Yeah, yeah!" I say quickly. I cough. "I'm good." I nod laughing. He smiles.
"Alright lovebirds! We have a game to win here!" Laura yells from their side of the net.
-
"Today was fun right?" Paul says as he walks we over from his place. He had dropped Meadow and her friends off at one of their houses to sleepover and me and Paul picked up a takeout and went to his place to eat it. It was now 11 and I was almost falling asleep on his sofa.
"Definitely. The most fun I've had in a while." I say smiling.
"Good." He looks deeply into my eyes. I stopped for a second to admire his, which were shining my porch light making his blue eyes stand out even more if it were possible.
"Well goodnight then." I turned after I didn't have anything to say and step into my house. As I'm about to close my front door Paul stops me.
"Can I ask you something?" He asks looking unsure.
I nod. "Shoot."
"Are you and Josh a thing?" He asks completely out of the blue. I'm sort of taken aback because I don't feel like me and Josh give off that vibe that were a couple. "I mean, Laura told me you both dated but I just wondered if you still had feelings for each other?" He looks down nervously.
I start laughing which causes Paul to look up at me quickly. "Josh has a girlfriend." I say and Paul shakes his head embarrassed. "And I know that I don't have feelings for him because I kinda like someone else right now."
Paul looks at me shocked to hear my words. "Oh, you do? Do I know them?" He says but he sounds awkward, like he's disappointed.
"Pretty well I think. He lives across the street and has a daughter, Meadow, I think her name is?" I say casually.
"Me? You like me?" He says frowning but it quickly turns into a smile once I nod, confirming my answer. "That's good, because my second question for you was, would you want to go on another date with me?" He asked sounding more confident.
"I might have to check my really busy schedule..." I say teasing him.
"Awh, c'mon! You're killing me." He says holding his heart as if I stabbed it.
I burst into laughter.
"Ok, ok! A second date sounds fun." I nod.
