Ring. Ring. Beep.

The sound of my phone wakes me up. I look around to find Caleb holding me close on the couch.

I guess we slept while cuddling.

The movie had ended and the TV was showing the button for replay.

Ring. Ring. Beep.

The sound reminds me what woke me up. I struggle to get out of his grip and make my way to the phone.

"Where are you ?" The person at the other end growls.

"Excuse me?" I yawn and search for a clock around the living area.

8 A.M.

I nearly drop my phone when I notice the time.

And then I recognize the voice.

"I asked WHERE. ARE. YOU." He grits out.

"I'm outside. Do you need me?" I feel my breath shaking while I reply back.

"Your mother died yesterday. She took a lot of pills last nights and that made her heart stop." Elijah answers.

I read along the lines. She suicided is what he meant.

If I weren't there last night, I would have blindly believed it.

"I'm sorry, WHAT?" I fake surprise.

You killed her. Is silent.

"We are preparing the funeral. Make sure to pay a visit." He cuts the call abruptly.

She really died. My mother died.

Drops flow down my face as I try to recompose myself.

"Who was it?" Caleb asks with a yawn interrupting him.

"My mother died."

"Was it why you came here last night?" He jumps up straight and takes me in his embrace. I appreciate the gesture.

"Yes. I was called to inform the funeral is held today." I answer truthfully.

"Do you feel remorse?" He pulls back and looks at me in the eye.

Cassandra, my mom, never looked at me in the eye because they resemble Elijah.

"I do. Why would you ask?"

"Because I remember once you said that you both did not have a 'particularly good relationship '." He puts the last words in quotes.

"We reestablished our bond recently. " I wipe the stream of tears.

"Ouch. That must suck." He wrinkles his nose and I nod silently.

"Should I accompany you to visit the creator of such a beauty?" He gestures at me.

"I think I'd rather handle it on my own." I smile and he curtly nods.

"Then let's get you some breakfast. "

"Wait." I grab his arm. "Don't you have to go for work?"

"Don't worry, that's handled. You just take care of yourself." He kisses my forehead and I let him go.

The funeral passes silently. Few of Cassandra's friends joined us but I did not let my sadness see through. The mask does a better work for it than me.

No one should suspect we made-up before her death.

"Sir, I would like a week's leave." I approach Elijah and inform him.
