last few breaths

I'd want you to be there for me
while I take my last few breaths
lying on a hospital bed,
weak, pale, and exhausted.
I just want you to lay by my side,
hold my hand,
and remind me of the times
we laughed together until our stomachs hurt.

When I ask, "Would you miss me?"
Just say, "Oh, no! I'll go through our picture albums."

And when I ask, "What do you think of our journey?"
Just say, "Oh, what a ride it was! But we were definitely happy together," then plant a kiss on my forehead.

Let me take delight in the warmth of you,
the way your heart sounds,
and savor your scent,
until you see a flatline.
