20th december 1985

Finally sitting in the airplane on the way to my parents, I sighed exhausted. What a troublesome week it had been. The electricity in my apartement failed and my long distance boyfriend broke up with me since he found someone closer to him. And that just in time for christmas. I just pulled my book out of my backpack, starting to read while everyone else got settled into their seats. It was a good decision to fly now since the weather is supposed to get bad pretty soon. The airplane took off and I relaxed. Nothing can stop me now from having a nice christmas with my family.

After already being in the air for a few hours, the captain suddenly made an announcement. "Ladies and gentleman, due to bad weather we need to land in Detroit and wait for the sky to clear back up. I apologize for the inconvenience, if necessary the airline will provide everyone with a hotelroom until we can safely fly to our destination.", he announced making me sigh. Just what I needed. Atleast I wouldn't need to stay at the airport.

Landing in Detroit, I waited for my luggage at the checkout, after I talked to a stewardess. She told me we could probably start the next day so it would be good to get the hotelroom from the airline. After retrieving my suitcase I walked to the infopoint of the airline, talking to the woman there. She checked me into a hotel not so far away and told me that I would be notified when the plane would start again. I thanked her and made my way out of the airport to catch a cab to the hotel. The trip there was long because of traffic and the snow that started to fall, getting heavier by the minute.

When I arrived at the hotel it was full on snowing, making it almost impossible to see what was in front of me. Inside I talked to the guy at the reception and he gave me the key to the room I would be staying in for now. I took the elevator to the right floor, walking down the corridor to the right room. Before I could open it I heard a group of guys cheering at the other end of the hallway. Looking over I saw a group of four guys, all having dark, curly hair. I sighed, rolling my eyes at them, hoping they wouldn't be too loud while I stayed here. I just wanted some peace and quiet, hoping I could resume my travel tomorrow.

I entered the room, leaving the suitcase in a corner, not bothering to unpack and walked to the phone. I wanted to call my parents to tell them I would be late. I let myself fall onto the bed and dialed their number, explaining everything to them. Afterwards I decided to take a hot shower and just go to sleep.

Waking up the next morning, I got ready to go down to the reception to ask for any news about my flight. Sadly there were none, so I decided to get some breakfast. In the lunch room I spotted the group of guys again, getting a glance of their faces. Somehow they looked familiar but I couldn't quite place from where I knew them. I got myself some breakfast and sat down at a small table in the corner. Looking out the window I could see that it was still snowing, adding to the white blanket already covering the ground. I finished my breakfast and dedicated the rest of the day with running between my room and the reception, hoping for the clear to climb on the plane again. Sadly there still weren't news at the end of the day.

22nd december 1985

Today was the same as yesterday. After breakfast I walked between my room and the reception nervously, already testing the nerves of the woman occupying the reception today. Around 3 pm there were news though. But they weren't good. The plane won't leave the airport until after christmas, due to a snowstorm forming outside that was only going to be worse. I groaned and thanked the lady at the reception anyways, going up to my room to call my parents. They were sad I couldn't make it and told me to stay safe. Since it already began to get late I decided to go to the hotel bar, getting a few drinks to drown my sorrow.

Arriving there it was unusually empty. It didn't bother me, less people to go on my nerves. I sat down at the bar, ordering my first drink from the barkeeper. One turned into four, the bar getting a little more crowded the later it got. An hour ago the group of men from my floor had settled into a booth not far behind me. Shortly before I finished my forth drink, two of the guys from the group stopped next to me, framing me in their middle. "Hey, do you want to join our table? You seem lonely.", the shorter one asked, wearing a beaming smile.
