A week had passed since Dominic stole that kiss from me under the water. No mention of it had been uttered by either of us. I thought that maybe he had mistook me for my sister or something. That was the only explanation I could think of. I would have thought that was the case if it wasn't for what happened yesterday in the workout room. Had Dominic purposefully touched himself in front of me? Or was it an honest mistake? Maybe the guy just found it fun to embarrass me? Something was definitely off about Dominic.
In my time here I was gradually becoming accustomed to my new strange life. My days were becoming ritualistic. Wake up, head to the dining room, eat whatever Lily prepared, go for a swim, dodge Dominic, and then get ready for work if I worked that day. It was Saturday now so I had the day off. Dominic had agreed to let me have a friend over for the day so Ryan was due to arrive soon and I was thankful to have the distraction from my Dominic-filled thoughts. I had told Ryan to bring a swimsuit so he could be as amazed by the pool as I was when I first arrived. While not a swimmer himself, I thought even he might appreciate the beauty of Dominic's backyard.
A resounding chime echoed through the house, signaling a visitor. The doorbell, designed to be heard even from the backyard, was a force to be reckoned with. Its volume could cause actual pain if one was unfortunate enough to be in the foyer when it rang.
Dominic's voice rang out, "Adam! Your friend is here!"
I sprang from my sunbathing spot on the lawn chair and dashed inside. Dominic had beat me to it and he and Ryan stood in the entry, smiles on their faces, chatting about me.
"Here he is!" Dominic announced my arrival, gesturing with his hands like he was presenting some prized pony. Ryan stepped in, his eyes growing wide as he saw the interior.
"Wow," he said, earning an appreciative smile from Dominic.
"C'mon," I gestured for him to follow, and he nodded, still looking around as he followed me. I brought him into my room, closing and locking the door behind me.
"I can't believe you live here," he said, pulling his swim trunks from his bag since I was already in mine. I sat down on my bed, using my phone to distract me and also give privacy to Ryan to change.
"Yeah, Dominic is some special architect or something," I shrugged. "Makes bank."
"Is he going to pay for your college?" Ryan asked jokingly and I laughed.
"Not that I know of."
"Damn. Maybe if you stick around and become part of his life he might want to. At least your sister might convince him."
I'd be lying if I said the thought hadn't crossed my mind. I didn't want to be devious, but I knew I wouldn't be able to pay my tuition without loans. Dominic liked to appear generous, so why not take advantage of it? Would he be that generous? He had already suggested I didn't have to work at Vitality anymore.
"I don't know," I said, trying not to look as conniving as I felt.
"You said your sister doesn't work, right? So he's basically her sugar daddy."
"No, she works. She's in a band. So her hours are weird." I shrugged. "And I don't think she makes much." I realized, thinking maybe Ryan had a point. Maybe Dom paid most their bills.
"Well, let's go see this pool," Ryan said.
I led him into the bathroom, handing him a towel as I explained he needed the cat in there with him if he were to close the door. He raised his eyebrow, hoping I was kidding. With a sad shake of my head, he knew I was serious.
