Junior year started way too soon and Halloween was just around the corner. Mom and I sat in the living room and she was watching the news with Mews in her lap. I was doing homework because, shocker, I forgot yesterday.

Suddenly, Dustin ran into the living room and practically destroyed it.

"Son of a bitch! Son of a bitch!" He cursed, pulling at the couch cushion beside me. "Another stupid penny!" He looked at me. "Move!"

"What?" I looked up at him slowly.

He grabbed my arm and yanked me off the couch.

"Dude!" I shouted, dropping my books onto the ground as I steadied myself.

Dustin threw the penny and it flew by Mom and Mews.

"Dusty, watch it! You almost hit Mews." Mom warned.

"Can I please check under your cushions?" Dustin asked her.

"Oh, she gets asked nicely, but I get thrown off the couch?" I picked up my books and sat back down.

"Dusty." Mom groaned.

"Mom, please? It's an emergency!" Dustin whined.

Mom groaned again and Dustin mocked her.

"Are you going to the arcade again?" I rolled my eyes.

"Yes, because I have a life, unlike you." Dustin replied.

"Oh, really?" I tilted my head.

Dustin held up two quarters before running towards his room. "Love you, Mom."

"I feel loved." I commented.

"Love you, too, Athena!" Dustin shouted from his room.

"Damn right you do." I muttered, finishing my homework as he left for the arcade.

I got ready for school the following morning as Steve picked me up.

I was convinced that Nancy and Jonathan were secretly hooking up. Every time I asked, Nancy said nothing happened between them. He picks her up for school every day and drives her home.

I'm slowly losing my patience.

I sat in Steve's car out front of school as he showed me his college essay. Being a year older than me means he's going off to college next year...or trying to.

With this essay, I wasn't sure.

"It's crap, I know." Steve sighed.

"It's not crap. It just needs some reorganization." I told him and he groaned. "Do you want me to mark it?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I guess." He shrugged.

"In the first paragraph, you used the basketball game versus northern as a metaphor for your life, which is amazing. But then, around here, you start talking about your granddad's experiences in the war. How are they even connected?" I questioned.

"It connects because...because, you know, we both won." Steve answered and I stared at him. "Do you think I should start from scratch?"

"When's the deadline?" I questioned.

"It's tomorrow for early application. Can you come and help me tonight?" Steve asked.

"No, we have that dinner tonight, remember?" I reminded him.

Steve, Nancy and I were having dinner with Barb's parents. He wanted to join since the last place Barb was seen at was his house.

"Oh, my God!" Steve groaned.
