The following day, Mom was still very upset. She declared Mews missing and stood outside, waving her favorite toy around.
Dustin was on the phone with God knows who.
"Dusty, Athy, you're sure she's not in either of your rooms?" Mom asked us as she came back inside.
Dustin held up his hand because someone was talking on the other side.
"I checked, Mom, twice. She's not there." I shook my head.
Aside from Dustin and I, Mews was Mom's baby. When we're at school or out with friends, Mews was always here to keep Mom company.
"Uh-huh." Dustin told the person on the phone. "Thank you so much, Mr. McCorkle. Thank you so much. You are a true lifesaver. Alright, this was great. Thank you. Alright. Have a good one. Bye bye, now. Alright. You, too." Dustin hung up the phone and faced Mom and I. "Alright, great news."
"They found her?" Mom got excited.
"No...but they saw her wandering around Loch Nora." Dustin stepped over to us.
"How did the poor baby get all the way out there?" Mom held one of my hands and held Dustin's in her other as she cried.
"I don't know. Lost, I guess. But they're gonna look for her. I'll stay here, just in case they call again and you're gonna go help look. Yeah? Athena will go with you." Dustin volunteered me.
"No, no, Athena wanted to check on Nancy. She thinks Nancy's sick. I'll go find Mews." Mom hugged us.
"You're gonna find her, Mom." Dustin encouraged.
"Yeah, she'll see you and come straight home." I smiled.
"We can find her." Dustin gave her a thumbs up.
"We can find her." Mom repeated.
"I love you." Dustin blew a kiss.
"Love you, Mom." I smiled.
"I love you both, too." Mom left the house and shut the door behind her.
Dustin immediately faced me once she was gone. "You don't have your driver's license."
"I've noticed." I nodded.
"So you better get walking." Dustin shoved me towards the front door.
"Dustin!" I pushed him away. "What is going on with you?"
"You should be asking Nancy that. Have fun, love you!" Dustin shut the door the minute I stepped outside.
I stared at the door for a moment. "So weird." I turned on my heel and began my walk to Nancy's house.
Steve Harrington was holding a bouquet of flowers as he walked up to the Henderson household. He was going to apologize to his girlfriend.
"Steve?" Dustin questioned and noticed the flowers in his hands. "Are those for my Mom?"
"They're...They're for your sister." Steve furrowed his eyebrows.
"She's not home." Dustin replied.
"Where is she?" Steve asked.
"Nancy's, but that doesn't matter. We have bigger problems than your love life." Dustin walked over to his car. "We can pick up Athena if it makes you feel better."
I knocked on Nancy's door and Mr. Wheeler opened it.
"Athena." Mr. Wheeler nodded.
"Mr. Wheeler, is Nancy home?" I asked.
"Karen, where's Nancy?" Mr. Wheeler called behind him.
"Alley's!" Karen replied.
"Alley's." Mr. Wheeler repeated.
I sighed. "Okay, thanks."
He shut the door and I turned around. Nancy obviously wasn't at Alley's. She only uses Alley's as an excuse at certain times. Like right now when there's a chance she could've said she was at my house and I just came looking for her...or like the time when Dustin blabbed that Nancy wasn't at my house once and Nancy got grounded.
Since Jonathan wasn't at school either, I concluded they were together and my next stop was his house.
A horn honking brought my attention to the road and I saw Steve's car.
"Steve?" I questioned and only got more confused when I saw my brother in the passenger seat. "Dustin?"
"Your brother did something bad." Steve spoke up instantly.
"Woah! I didn't even tell you anything yet!" Dustin argued.
"Whatever, get in." Steve motioned to me.
I walked to the passenger door, but Dustin locked it.
"Really?" I raised my eyebrows.
"I called shotgun." Dustin shrugged.
I looked forward and took a deep breath before I lashed out. I opened the back door and sat in the back.
"You should...maybe save your anger for when you find out what I did." Dustin muttered.
"What did you do?" I spoke in a hard tone.
"I, uh..." Dustin stammered before holding out a bouquet of flowers. "...I got you these flowers."
"Hey!" Steve groaned. "I got you those flowers."
"For what?" I questioned.
"I wanted to say sorry. You're not a bad distraction, you're a good distraction." Steve apologized.
I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Dude." Dustin shook his head.
"Your brother did something bad!" Steve brought the spotlight back on Dustin.
"Do you still have that bat?" Dustin asked Steve.
"Bat? What bat?" Steve questioned.
"The one with the nails?" Dustin clarified.
"You mean the one I made? Which is so badass, by the way." I smiled to myself.
"Yeah, I have it. Why?" Steve asked.
"You're not gonna like it. Either of you." Dustin winced.
