Another round of basketball with Steve. I sat on the bleachers, listening to music on my Walkman as I watched Billy taunt Steve. I removed my headphones.
"Jesus, do you ever stop talking, man?" Steve shouted back. "Come on!"
Billy laughed in response. "What? You afraid the coach is gonna bench you now that I'm here? Or are you scared that smoking hot girl of yours is gonna find another man to keep her company."
My eyes went wide, why am I always dragged into everyone's conversations?
Billy looked over at me with that classic smirk, causing Steve to also look over at me. My eyes were only on Steve but I didn't have time to warn him as Billy shoved Steve to the ground and threw the basketball into the hoop.
Steve laid on the ground as Billy walked over and held out his hand.
Don't accept it, Steve. Don't accept-
He accepted it.
Billy said something to Steve before shoving him back down and walking off.
I got off the bench and walked over to Steve, helping him up.
"Hey, you okay?" I asked.
"Fine." Steve squared his shoulders.
"Don't listen to him. He's just being an asshole." I brushed the hair out of Steve's eyes.
"You're distracting me." He said.
My hand dropped to my side. "What?"
"Look, I love having you here, but he's just gonna keep throwing winks and saying things about you and it's only getting me more riled up." Steve said.
"I'm distracting you? Maybe you should get your head in the game, Steve. You asked me to be here for support and I am, but now you wanna throw me out because I'm being noticed?" I asked, trying to understand the full picture.
"I didn't mean it like that-" Steve began.
"Whatever, Steve." I rolled my eyes, walking to the doors.
I waited in the hallway until Steve was done in the showers.
He was my ride home.
I watched someone walk by me and noticed it was Billy. He was alone. I was about to speak up but his head turned to the side and spotted me first.
"Athena, right?" He smirked, leaning against the wall.
"Look, I don't know what kind of hotshot you think you are, but you keep messing with Steve and I will knock you on your ass, you understand?" I glared, I wasn't afraid of any man. Especially not Billy.
"What if I told you I'd like that?" He whispered, stepping closer.
"Then I'd say you're insane." I replied.
"Oh, you have no idea." Billy's eyes looked me up and down. "When you want a real man to show you just how good life can be, baby, you know where to find me."
With that, he pushed off the wall and walked backwards, giving me one final wink and leaving the school.
I glared at his retreating figure. Oh, how much I would like to stick my spiked bat right up his-
"Thena." Steve's voice broke me out of my violent thoughts.
I ignored him and walked forward. "Let's go." I'm still upset at him for thinking I'm 'such a distraction'.
We drove in silence and Steve pulled up to my house.
"Thena." He tried again.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Steve." I got out of the car.
"I love you!" He called.
"I love you, too." I replied, still walking towards my house.
"How was school?" Mom asked, grabbing the cat food as I entered the house.
"Fine." I replied.
"Athy, what happened?" Mom looked at me as she walked over to Mews' bowl.
"Just...a lot of schoolwork." I shrugged.
Mom gave me a smile as she poured the cat food. "Have you seen Mews?"
Now that I think about it, I didn't see her this morning.
The door opened and I looked as Dustin came home.
"Hey, Dusty!" Mom smiled.
"Hi, hey. Hey, Mom. Hey, Athena." Dustin greeted.
"Everything okay?" Mom questioned.
"Yeah, everything's fine. Yeah." Dustin replied, walking to his room.
"Both my kids always look so stressed." Mom muttered.
