The next day at school, I told Steve what happened at his house in the alley behind school.

"So, wait a sec. I don't understand. You and Nancy went back to my house?" Steve furrowed his eyebrows.

"To look for Barb." I nodded.

"Yeah, okay, but why didn't you just talk to me?" Steve asked. "That's crazy."

"I don't know." I shrugged.

"You seriously think you and Nancy saw a guy in a mask just hanging out in my yard?" He asked.

"It wasn't a mask." I disagreed.

"But...he had no face?" Steve looked very confused.

"I don't know, Steve. I have a bad feeling." I admitted.

"Oh, this is bad. This is really bad." Steve leaned against the wall.

"I know." I agreed.

"The cops...they're gonna want to talk to all of us now." Steve said and I stared at him in disbelief. "Nancy, Tommy, Carol, everybody who was at the party."

"That's what you're worried about?" I raised my eyebrows as a hard look crossed my face.

My best friend is missing and he's worried about getting yelled at.

"My parents are gonna murder me! You don't understand. My Dad's a grade A asshole." Steve continued.

"Barb is missing and you're worried about your Dad?" I scoffed.

"Okay, just...when you talk to the cops, just...don't mention the beers." Steve pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer to me.

"Yeah, Steve, that was gonna be my starting line, teenagers drinking beers in your backyard." I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes.

"Hey, I'm serious. It's just gonna get us both in trouble and Barbara's got nothing to do with it." Steve added.

I scoffed again and walked away.

"Thena, wait. Athena! Athena, wait!" Steve called after me, but I ignored him.

I sat in class and doodled in my notebook. Learning was the last thing on my mind, not that I paid much attention anyway.

"Athena Henderson." My name was called and I looked up to see the office lady. "If you'll come with me, please?"

I gathered my things and followed the lady into the cafeteria. I noticed that my Mom and two officers were waiting for me.

Mom stood with a pity stare. I was able to fill her in about Barb when she returned from work last night.

"Good afternoon, Miss. Henderson. Is it alright if I call you, Athena?" Officer Powell asked.

"Sure." I sat down beside my Mom and she rubbed my back.

"We already talked to Miss. Wheeler, but, of course, we have to ask you, too." Powell said and I explained what happened that night...excluding the alcohol and sex. "This argument you and Barbara had? What exactly was it about?"

"First off, it wasn't an argument. Barb wanted to leave and I didn't. I told her to go home." I corrected.

"Then what?" Powell asked.

"I went upstairs to get changed into dry clothes." I answered.

"And the next day, you and Miss. Wheeler went back and...saw a bear, you're thinking?" Powell furrowed his eyebrows.
