The next day at school I told Steve what happened at his house, we were in the alley beside school.
"So, wait a sec. I don't understand. You and Nancy went back to my house?" Steve asked.
"To look for Barb." I nodded.
"Yeah, okay, but why didn't you just talk to me?" Steve asked. "That's crazy."
"I don't know." I shrugged.
"You seriously think you and Nancy saw a guy in a mask just hanging out in my yard?" He asked.
"It wasn't a mask." I disagreed.
"But he had no face?" Steve said, confused.
"I don't know, Steve. I have a bad feeling." I admitted.
"Oh, this is bad. This is really bad." Steve leaned against the wall.
"I know." I nodded.
"The cops...they're gonna want to talk to all of us now." Steve said and I furrowed my eyebrows. "Nancy, Tommy, Carol, everybody who was at the party."
"That's what you're worried about?" I asked in disbelief.
"My parents are gonna murder me! You don't understand. My dad's a grade A asshole." Steve continued.
"Barb is missing and you're worried about your dad?" I scoffed.
"Okay, just...when you talk to the cops, just...don't mention the beers." Steve pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer to me.
"Yeah, Steve, that was gonna be my starting line, that teenagers were drinking beers in your backyard." I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes.
"Hey, I'm serious, it's just gonna get us both in trouble and Barbara's got nothing to do with it." Steve said.
I scoffed again, walking away.
"Thena, wait. Athena! Athena, wait!" Steve called after me but I ignored him.
While in class I doodled in my book.
"Athena Henderson." I heard someone call and looked up to see the office lady. "If you'll come with me, please?"
I gathered my things and followed the lady into the cafeteria, my mom stood there. I told her last night about Barb.
"Good afternoon, Miss. Henderson. Is it alright if I call you, Athena?" Officer Powell asked.
"Sure." I sat down beside my mom, she gave me a pity smile.
"We already talked to Miss. Wheeler, but, of course, we have to ask you, too." Powell said and I explained what happened that night, beside the alcohol and sex. "This argument you and Barbara had? What exactly was it about?"
"First off, it wasn't an argument. Barb wanted to leave and I didn't. I told her to go home." I said.
"Then what?" Powell asked.
"I went upstairs to get changed into dry clothes." I explained.
"And the next day, you and Miss. Wheeler went back and...saw a bear, you're thinking?" Powell asked.
"Not sure if I would call it a bear. Whatever that thing is, Nancy and I think it took Barb. You need to check behind Steve's house-" I began.
"We did. There's nothing there. There's no sign of a bear." Officer Callahan spoke up.
"And no car." Powell added.
"What?" I asked, confused. How?
"Look. We figure that Barbara came back last night and then she took off, went somewhere else." Callahan guessed.
