Eating those two bananas curved my appetite, so I told Mr. Orangutan, "I don't want any more, I'm good, thank you."
He looked in my direction, and the expression on his face was hilarious—like he didn't believe me at all. Without a word, he started peeling another banana.
"Mm!" He made a noise, like he was telling me it was fine, that he had plenty more.
I laughed and quickly added, "It's just because I want to save room for later, not because I don't want to eat all your bananas. I know you have more."
That seemed to please him, or else he really would have fed me the whole bundle. He nodded in satisfaction and ate the one he peeled.
As we walked forward, I strolled side by side with Memi, and Bai was on the other side of her. I poked Memi and grinned.
"Bestie, that was some bad bitch shit you did back there—so sexy!" I fanned myself dramatically. "The way you kicked her back down so smoothly... I have never been more satisfied."
Memi beamed at my praise, flipping her sleek hair. "I'm a Queen!"
"Period, SIS!" I shot back instantly.
Memi then said, "Not as good as it was to see you smack her—not once, but twice—and I watch her shoes fly off her feet. Heeeheeh!" She snorted a bit, slapping her leg as she laughed.
We laughed, and Bai giggled beside us.
She smirked. "Plus, it felt so good to knock her silly for all the times she stressed me and my son. I am so glad I came out to meet you when you called me. This day couldn't be better—I get to see you, and that stupid girl lost everything. What a lovely day."
I stretched, already thinking ahead. "Imma have the guys make the food while the meeting is getting prepared."
Memi and Bai's eyes practically turned into hearts at the mention of food.
I puffed my chest out. "I told you Momma was gonna feed my babies—I ain't lie."
Memi grabbed my arm and leaned in. "Thank goodness! I thought we was gonna have to wait until after the meeting. I ain't had a seafood boil since the last one you made—I can't wait!"
Bai sighed dreamily. "Same. I can already smell it, and I want some rice. I'm starving after today."
I glanced at her and winked.
As the three of us talked about the day and everything that had happened, we got to the moment where it all truly unfolded. In the middle of laughing, I heard a noise behind me.
"Nngh!"
I looked back at Rosa.
She looked a mess. The flower hairpiece she had worn was completely gone, her hair wild and tangled. Her clothes were covered in mud, her cheek red from where I had smacked her twice, and there was a little bit of blood on her lips. She looked exhausted, her body weighed down by everything that had happened.
I knew she had to be hurting. She had fallen from pretty high up when Winston dropped her—he was almost seven and a half feet tall. It made me wonder if she had cracked a rib or something. She looked pitiful and sad, and I could see the tears rimming her eyes.
I shouldn't have cared.
She had caused this entire situation. She had nearly killed Bai or Parker—or at the very least, she had intended to gravely injure them, which could have been just as fatal.
But at the end of the day, I was a girl's girl. And I just wasn't the type of person to be outright cruel, even if conflict with her was inevitable.
