Being half Brazilian as a Japanese kid was hard. You got made fun of plenty of times. But you were okay with that, because your parents made sure you knew that your heritage wasn't something to be ashamed of.

Your mother was natively Brazilian, and she always tried her best to share the culture with you and your dad. She helped you and your father learn Portuguese whenever she had the chance. She made food for you, your father, and your best friend. She told you all about her home country. Your father knew she was homesick, but he never quite managed to find a way to ease that homesickness.

Your parents were the lights of your life. You admired them both for everything they did. Your father was a famous mechanic. He was always ready to spend time with you if you asked. You often asked to learn about cars and bikes from him, so you would spend time with him at his shop. You helped him when he let you, which wasn't really all that often, but you learned a lot. Even if you didn't help him, you knew cars inside and out by the time you were eleven. You got much closer with your dad, simply because the nature of his work was more flexible when it came to children being there.

Your mother was a doctor. But even while being a doctor, she still managed to fulfil her role as your mother. She wasn't around as much as your father, but she always made time for you and your dad. She helped you with homework when your dad couldn't help you, she would try her best to cook whenever she was home, and she was always smother you with hugs before you went to sleep. She was a boisterous woman, which you inherited quite a bit from her.

Your best friend may have been the only one who never made a strange comment about the fact that you were half Brazilian. Hoshiumi actually attempted to learn a bit about your heritage. He never really picked that much of it up, but you gave him credit for trying.

You met Hoshiumi at your dad's shop when you were eight. Hoshiumi's dad had needed his car's engine fixed, and he had decided to stop by and see what your father said. You were in the back, watching your father work to put new tires on a car that had been left with him, when he called for your dad.

"Coming!" He called, setting down the wrench in his tool box. He smiled at you. "Do you want to stay back here?"

You shook your head. You were comfortable enough with the building to stay back there, but you wanted to spend as much time with him as you could. You got up off the chair and trotted into the lobby. Your dad followed you with a smile on his face.

"L/n~san," Hoshiumi's dad said. "It's nice to meet you." Your dad ran his shop alone, so it wasn't unusual for people to call him by his name.

"It's nice to meet you too...?" Your dad replied, voice trailing to ask his name.

"Hoshiumi," he said.

"So, what's the problem, Hoshiumi~san?"

"It's the engine," Hoshiumi told him. "My son and I heard it making a whole bunch of noise on the way home. I thought I should get that checked out before it gave out."

Only after the man mentioned his son did you realise there was a boy next to him. He was your age, and he seemed fairly shy. He was clinging to his father's pant leg, peeking around it to look at you. He had white hair that was fairly long and spiked back. His gold eyes seemed to pierce right through you.

You had totally spaced out from the conversation the adults were having, and instead it had become a staring contest between you and the boy. Neither of you blinked or looked away for what felt like forever, but it was actually closer to thirty second. You finally blinked when your dad placed a hand on your head. You looked up at him.

"Why don't you keep Hoshiumi~kun company in here while I go check out this engine?" He asked you.

You were hesitant, but you nodded anyway. Your father walked out with Hoshiumi's father. The two of you stood there in silence for a moment. You didn't really know what to say, so you decided to just not say anything.
