Despite knowing the roof was off limits, you tended to gravitate up there when you had time during lunch. There were people who came up from time to time for whatever reason. You just enjoyed getting some fresh air through out the day. You had gone up there a lot during your first year with your friend, but she always wanted to come up here as a way to break the rules.Even though she moved, and you were left more or less alone, you enjoyed coming up here to think about your time with her and get a well deserved break.
The school's roof didn't have as tall of a fence as most other schools. But since no one came up here regularly and no one had ever had an accident up here, they had never really put up a higher railing. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing to you, but it didn't quite make a difference.
You very rarely saw anyone up there, which only made it all the more surprising when someone did. You often got scared bad enough you nearly tripped and hit your head on the railing. You actually had hit your head a couple times during your first year.
You leaned against the railing, staring out at the hilly area nearby. The warm breeze combed through your hair. It was always nicest to stand up here during the spring. You could vaguely smell the flowers that had been planted three stories below you, but it wasn't very strong. They had just bloomed recently, you were pretty sure. The silence was calm and soothing.
Then it all came crashing down.
"Hey! Don't—" someone shouted.
You pulled away from the railing like it was burning and snapped your head around. You flinched just enough your hip slammed into the railing. You sucked air in through your teeth and grabbed it. You had hit it pretty hard—you could almost feel the bruise forming as you held it.
Well, it was actually more like touched it, because the boy that had come up to the roof grabbed your wrist and pulled you away from the edge. He pulled you with enough force you actually fell on top of him, taking you both down to the ground with a scream. Your knees and shins scrapped the ground, as did your hand in a poor attempt to stop yourself from landing straight on top of him. To his credit, though, he hadn't let you go.
You pulled your wrist from his grasp—the fall had kind of knocked the wind out of the poor guy, you almost felt bad—and cradled your free hand as you examined the damage done to it. The entirety of your palm had been been thoroughly sliced and was starting to bleed a little. You sat down, pulling your legs out in front of you to inspect them too. They weren't much better, though you had clearly landed more on your left leg than your right.
"Are you—?" He started as he sat up and caught his breath.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" You snapped. No one had ever done something quite like that before. Usually they just yell at you and and you would trip, but that? You were actually pretty pissed off, now that you had fallen like that. "What did you do that for? Ow!" You hissed. Your hand and legs had started to sting. You could feel the pebbles digging into you, but touching the scrapes to get them off would just hurt more.
"What do you mean?" He shouted. "I thought you were going to hurt yourself!"
"I was just standing there! How the fuck did it look like I was going to hurt myself? That fall hurt me pretty bad, you know!"
He looked down at your hands and shins, quickly panicking as he saw the state of them. "I—I'm so sorry! I just didn't want..."
"Why are you even up here, anyway? Don't you know this place is supposed to be closed?"
"Well, I thought I'd come check and see if it was really closed!" He said. "I wanted to try and eat lunch up here with a friend, but then I saw you at the railing..."
