Chapter 24: Parents and Dorms

Aiko was sat on her bed, scrolling through her phone when she heard the doorbell ring. She got up and used her crutches to get to the stairway, but when she tried to go down the stairs, Haru ran up and said, "On."

Aiko rolled her eyes and made most of her body incorporeal, except her hands so she could hold her crutches, so Haru could pick her up and carry her down the stairs. As she was being carried, Aiko could make out the features of All Might and Aizawa in the entrance of her home. Both teachers looked up and saw Aiko being carried down the stairs by seemingly nothing. "Thank you for agreeing to see us," Aizawa said with a slight bow before they followed Aiko's parents inside.

The heroes sat down at Aiko's dinner table, Aiko and her parents quick to join them. "Is this about the dorms?" Aiko asked.

"Yes, we just wanted to stop by and clear any concerns you may have and answer any questions," Aizawa stated.

Aiko nodded before Aiko's parents sighed. "We've talked it over, and we are not comfortable with it," Aiko's dad stated.

Aiko's heart dropped, her eyes starting to tear up. "I'm sorry, but ever since she's started at UA it's been attack after attack. She has a permanent scar on her chest and a busted knee now because of her being in the hero course," Aiko's mom said.

"We humbly apologize for that..." All Might said with a somber expression.

"Mom... both of those instances are from me breaking the rules and being reckless..." Aiko admitted shamefully.

"Doesn't this mean that UA is unfit to discipline you and your classmates?" Aiko's dad asked, "I'm sorry, but the safety of my daughter is the most important thing to me right now. I can't just sit by and let this keep happening."

Aiko grit her teeth and stood up, storming out as fast as she could despite using crutches. Aiko's mom sighed, looking at All Might. "I hate to do this... this has been her dream ever since... well... All Might you may not remember this, but when Aiko was four years-old, we got caught up in a villain attack. A piece of rubble was going to crush us, but you saved us. Ever since then, she's wanted to be a hero, just like you. It was hard throughout elementary and junior high since the other kids teased her for her quirk, but she never lost sight of her goal to be a hero... doing this now must make her incredibly upset... but as her mother, I am frightened for my child at your school," Aiko's mom said firmly.

Aizawa and All Might listened to the story in shock, not knowing the depth that Aiko's passion for being a hero went to. All Might took in a deep breath, unable to think of the words to say. Aizawa sighed and said, "I understand your concern, it is very rational. However, I will say that the dorm system is a way that we will be protecting your children. The League knows of your kid's existence, and in public they are likely to attack. A few weeks ago, the leader of the League confronted a student in a public mall. At the very least, being at UA, we will be able to protect her from the League. However, I will also say that your daughter is extremely exceptional in her pursuit of being a hero. She's the hardest working of anyone in the class, but also the most sympathetic of her fellow classmates. She is a hero in every sense of the word."

Aiko's parents stared at the man in disbelief, tears coming to their eyes. Before anyone could speak, Aiko came limping back into the room, holding a new piece of paper. "Mom, dad, you know the letter I got yesterday?" she asked.

The pair shook their heads as Aiko held the letter out. "While we were at camp, I connected with a boy who had lost his parents. I was able to bring him closure through allowing him to speak with them one last time. I did it after the Hosu incident as well when we found the spirit of a kid who was in a nomu that Stain killed. The kid was a friend of two of my classmates, and I was able to bring them closure. This. This is something that only I can do!" Aiko exclaimed, "Please, being a hero has brought me so much joy and purpose. Don't take it away..."
