"Fia!" I yelled as the titan opened its mouth.
I clenched the handles of my swords as I drew them out, sending both of my anchors into the arm of the titan.

I sent myself flying towards the titan, lining up my blades with the nape. I swung with all of my force, cutting deep into its nape. I now knew why it's not a good idea to fight titans in open areas, for after I sliced its nape, I too was sent flying towards the ground.

The titans large body fell with a loud BOOM. The force it fell with sent little pebbles flying towards me. One hit my forehead, leaving a tiny red welt.

When I stood up, a sharp pain shot through my body. I must've landed on my feet wrong. But that didn't matter to me right now.

"Fia!" I yelled once again as I ran towards
the titans closed fist, I ignored the pain as best as I could, I could see Fias head poking out of the titans' palm.

I took out my blades once again as sliced away at the large fingers that held her captive. Her forehead was bleeding, and so was her nose. But she was breathing, thank the gods, but unresponsive.

I yanked her out from the grip of the titans, she fell nearly lifelessly into my arms.
"Fia come one!" I yelled at her, "don't die here!"

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a few other soldiers riding towards us, it was Erwin and his team! I put Fias head down softly into the grass and stood up. I began to flail my arms around to try and get their attention. But I think the big ass titan that was now evaporating was enough.

"What happened!" Erwin asked as he quickly jumped off his horse and went to tend to Fia's wounds.
"One of the captains he- he didn't make it. And Fia was about to get eaten, so I killed-"
"You killed this titan?" Erwin asked with surprise as he turned back to look at me.
I nodded, surly I wouldn't get I trouble for that, right?

"A titan kill on your first mission isn't bad, good job newbie." One of Erwin's soldiers said as they slapped me on the back.
"Fia will be okay," Erwin said as he tied some bandages around her forehead, "but she'll be unresponsive for a little bit. Rey, go alert the commander. We need to retreat back into the walls." Erwin said as he stood up, he held Fia in his arms.

I nodded as I got back on my horse, my right leg was absolutely killing me. I hoped it wasn't too serious, but I did take a nasty fall.
I rode along with Erwin and his squad back to the formation, which was now headed back to the walls. We had been out here for a few hours, but it felt like seconds. No one expected to encounter as many titans as we did, and of course the newbies were caught up in the middle of it.

Nothing could've prepared me for the number of insults the corps received as we walked back into town. It was like we were a circus, a bruised, beaten circus. It occurred to me that these people had absolutely no idea what it was like to take on a titan.

"Commander Shadis! What in the hell do you intend to accomplish like this!?" A citizen yelled.
The commanders back was facing me, but I could see him tense up. I guess the insults got to him too.

"Hey," Erwin said from next to me, "Don't let these people get to you. It happens all the time, you just gotta learn to live with it." He said with a smile.
I nodded and winced from the festering pain in my leg. It was like my bone was throbbing or something.
"Something wrong with your leg?" Erwin asked.

"Yeah..." I groaned as I tried to move it, "I landed on it wrong."
"We'll get you checked out at medical too."
Even though I had just met Erwin, we spoke as if we had been friends for years. His smile was so warm and welcoming. It almost reminded me of my brother, Erwin reminded me of my brother.

When we finally arrived back to the scout's headquarters, I was rushed along with Fia, who was still unresponsive, to medical. I honestly didn't know what we could do for her but wait for her to wake up.

I was examined too, my leg had turned a light shade of purple, and it was numb now. Apparently, it was a really bad fracture. One of the nurses wrapped it up nice and tightly, I had to wear a splint too.

"Go easy on your leg for a bit, no training, you'll need lots of rest." The nurse said as she helped me lay down into bed. She slowly lifted my left up and onto the mattress.
"How long will I be bed ridden like this?" I asked, I didn't want to fall behind on the rankings. I planned to make a name out of myself like my brother did.

"A week or two of hard rest, and then we will have to help you with walking and such, the basics." The nurse said as she handed me a cup of tea.
I took the tea from her hand and began to sip on it, "alright, thanks doc." I said with a smile.
"Hey guys!" Hange yelled as they burst through the doors to the medical wing. Miche and Felix followed close behind them.

"There you are F/n! I heard you killed an abnormal today, I told you that you were a badass!" They said as they sat at the edge of my bed.
"Barely, I nearly got myself killed." I mumbled, although her compliments did help my ego.
"Where's Fia?" Felix asked.
I pointed to the bed across from mine, "she's over there. Are you blind or something?" I teased.
Felix chuckled, "if you weren't injured right now, I would've definitely punched you or something."

I scoffed at that, "and I would kick your ass."
"Would you two quit fighting!" Hange said in an annoyed tone, "we should celebrate or something, we survived our first mission as official members of the survey corps!"
I smiled, they were right, we did survive. Well, Fia and I barely did, mostly Fia, but it was something. This first mission was our initiation, and it made me wonder how much harder things would get, it made me wonder just how many missions it would take for me to bite the dust.

Dear, Calin,
I know it must be silly to write a letter addressed to you. You're dead, you can't read this. But hopefully you're looking over my shoulder and laughing at the corniness of it, I know I would. But today I survived my first mission in the survey corps, I saved my friend Fias life, and in the process, I killed a titan. An abnormal one at that. I think you and Fia would've gotten along, just maybe. I also met your old acquaintance, Erwin Smith. I can see why you liked him, in some ways he reminds me of you. It's been nearly four years since you passed, Calin, it's insane to think about. But I hope I will turn out differently than you, I hope I can survive until the very end. I promise to make a difference in this world.

Love,
F/n
