"Break out into your squads! Save as many people as possible! Lay down your life!"
It was terrifying how quickly titans could overrun land. From what I heard in the reports, the wall had fallen about five or six hours before we were notified. And in all that time, Shiganshina had already been evacuated and was now a ghost town, apart from the titans of course.
Corpses of civilians and soldiers alike scattered throughout the plains. It was an absolute massacre.

"Oi! Don't get distracted! We have a job to do!" Levi yelled. It's insane how fast he noticed me zoning out.
"Two titans to the right! I see civilians too! Call for the carts!" Zunther yelled as he began to speed up.
Levi and I nodded at each other as we drew our swords.

"Felix, Fia! Go round up the citizens! Zunther, go with the cart and help any wounded or injured aboard! Levi and I will take out the two on the right. Don't you dare die!" I yelled.
"Oh come on! You always steal the titan kills!" Felix whined.

I glared back at him, "I don't need my squad getting devoured! Advance!"
Levi and I raced towards the titans at max speed. There were two thirteen-meter class, and they were pawing at the scattering civilians.
"At the same time, bring them down!" I yelled.
Levi nodded as we both accelerated, conserving gas wasn't an immediate concern. We were ordered to save as many as possible. That was what we planned to do.

Levi and I's coordination was always on point, as we sliced the napes of the titans almost in sync. I rode the titans head down as it fell to the ground; the civilians had a hopeful look on their faces.

"Everyone! Get into the carriage! We'll get you to safety!" I yelled as I began to push past the civilians. There were three more titans emerging from the fresh hole in the wall. There were too many.

"Levi! What should we do!" I yelled, making sure not to take my eyes off of those big bastards.
"How should I know?!" He said in response as he helped the last of the civilians into the carriage.

I refreshed my blades, I had dulled the last ones with my fast attack, "I don't know how long we can fight here." I said.
"Then let's worry about getting these people to safety, we'll fight only when necessary." He said as he walked up next to me, he too put a fresh set of blades on his operational grips.
I put my hand on his shoulder, "don't die, okay?" I said with a soft smile as I looked into his eyes.

He shrugged my hand off with a scoff, "I'm not going to die. You're the one I'm worried about." He mumbled.
I began to walk forward, "Then you're worried for nothing. I'm not gonna die until I free the world from these titans."

The rest of the night and the day after was spent bringing everyone that we could to safety. Although it wasn't many, it was better than none. Titans were truly ruthless. It was said that 1/3rd of humanity was completely wiped out.
"Hey." Levi said as he put his hand on my shoulder, breaking me out of my daze. "They're holding a meeting in town hall; your presence was requested."

I nodded and rubbed my eyes, slowly coming back to reality. I straightened up my uniform, then quickly made my way to the stables.
It was about a 30-minute ride from headquarters to town hall, and the entire time I was teeming with curiosity. I wondered what the big subject would be, and why I was invited to join them. I was only a section commander, I had no real importance to political matters, but I assumed Erwin put in a request like he always did.

Once we arrived at town hall, Levi and I were greeted and escorted inside by soldiers who were keeping the crowd of citizens outside the gates at bay. They were all angry at the number of refugees that had flooded their city and were eating their rations. I could tell the situation pissed Levi off.

"Right in here, you sir will have to wait outside." One of the men ordered, he was addressing Levi.
Levi glared up at the man, "Wherever she goes, I go." He said sternly.
The man stepped back and glanced at his second officer, then looked at me. His eyes were asking for approval.

I nodded, "I won't go in there without him." I said blankly as I twisted the doorknob. I gestured Levi to follow me inside.
"Welcome, captain F/n. Now that everyone's here let's start this." One of the head chairmen said in a monotone voice as he shuffled through the paperwork in front of him.

"To put it blankly, the citizens of Wall Rose are angry. They despise the refugees and even more the government for shoving them into their towns. There have been mass food shortages, we simply do not have the resources to feed them, nor house them."
The room stayed silent, everyone was listening and waiting for their time to give input on the matter.

The head chairman cleared his throat, "The capital is pressing the council to make a decision and a solution to these hard times. So, I propose this plan to you all, and we will take a vote on it. Send the refugees back towards wall Maria and cover it up as an attempt to take back the land and retrieve resources."

I simply could not believe what I was hearing. I looked around frantically too see if anyone was appalled, and to my dismay everyone seemed to be considering this cruel mass genocide.
Levi nudged me, "speak up if you have something to say." He whispered.

I slammed my hand down on the table in front of me, "absolutely not!" I yelled, causing the room to go completely silent.
The chairman glared at me, "Captain. Whatever do you mean."
I glanced around the room; everyone's eyes were on me.

"How do you plan to mask this as an attempt to retake the wall!? The government will never recover if we pull something like this! The trust the people have in us will go up in flames!"
The chairman stood up, "we have no choice! Do you want all of humanity to go hungry because of the refugees!? We are supposed to be thinking of the future, not for the wellbeing of the unfortunate!"

"I did not lay down my life, all of my comrades' lives, to saving those people. I spent nearly three days on the front lines saving people, and now you're basically saying me and my comrades did that for nothing? You're going against everything the military stands for!"
The chairman sighed, "Captain I understand your concerns, but we simply have no other choice."

My hands were shaking, I had never felt so hopeless or so angry. I couldn't believe that our on our option was to sacrifice over ten thousand people.

My teeth grit together, the anger that had been festering throughout this meeting was finally at its peak. I grabbed a glass that was next to me, gripping it my hand tightly. I glared at the chairman who could tell what was about to happen. I chucked the glass at him; it missed his head by an inch and shattered on the wall behind him.

"This isn't our only option, it's just that you all are too cowardly to do anything else but what's good for your pockets."
And with that I removed myself, later that night I heard that I had been banned from ever entering an official meeting or anything of that manner ever again.

Levi and I spent the night on the rooftop of HQ, just staring at the stars. We didn't talk, but somehow it was like we were communicating with each other by just being in each other's presence.
I'm sure we were both thinking about the future of life inside the walls, and how much fucking harder everything will begin to get.
