Y/N Mayfield, Max Mayfield's twin sister, has a life that's anything but ordinary. Strange things seem to follow her wherever she goes. What happens when she crosses paths with four boys? Will she trust them... or fall for one of them? And as the st...
Let me introduce myself. I'm Y/N Mayfield. I've got a twin sister named Max, short for Maxine, and we live with our mom, Susan, along with our stepdad, Neil, and his son, Billy.
Today might just be the worst day of my life. We're moving. Not just to another neighborhood, but from California all the way to Hawkins, Indiana. Yeah. You heard that right.
And why? Because my mom had to go and marry that guy... Neil, the walking, talking definition of a douchebag. Thanks to him, both Max's and my lives are being dragged across the country.
Right now, we're packing up the room Max and I share. Since we're twins, we've always done everything together. Skateboarding, video games, blasting music on our stereo, it might sound like "boy stuff," but we never cared about labels. We don't let anyone, especially boys, ruin our fun.
Truth is, I'm scared to move. Not that I'd ever admit it out loud. Everything I've ever known is here, our house, our streets, our favorite skate park. It feels like we're leaving a whole part of ourselves behind.
I was so deep in my thoughts I didn't even notice Max talking.
"What was that, Max? Sorry—I zoned out," I said, snapping back to reality.
"I asked if you're okay," she said, watching me closely. "You kind of drifted off."
"I'm fine. Just... thinking," I replied casually.
She nodded slowly but gave me that look—the one that said she wasn't buying it and was definitely going to dig into it later.
After finishing the last of the packing, we heard a shout from downstairs.
"MAX! Y/N! You think I've got all day? MOVE IT!" Billy yelled.
I sighed, and Max rolled her eyes.
She picked up one of her boxes and carried it downstairs. I stayed behind for a few more seconds, just standing there, taking one last look at our childhood room, nearly empty now. It didn't even feel like ours anymore.
Finally, I grabbed my two boxes and headed down. Neil took them from me and tossed them into the back of the moving van before slamming it shut.
Max and I climbed into the van, no way were we riding with Billy. I'd rather sit on boxes for six hours than deal with him for six minutes.
-------------------
The car ride was long. And I mean long.
As we got closer to Hawkins, we passed a worn-down sign that read: "Welcome to Hawkins, Indiana." And as if the universe was mocking us, "Highway to Hell" started playing on the radio. Figures.
When we finally pulled up to our new house, I looked around. Not terrible, I guess. Small town vibes, kind of boring. But at least the house didn't look like it was falling apart.
We started unloading boxes from the van, which took forever. But eventually, everything was inside.
Max and I went upstairs, ready to check out our new room, until Billy shoved me hard into the hallway wall.
"Watch it dumbass," he muttered like it was my fault.
God I wish he would just disappear.
Rubbing my shoulder, Max and I shot him identical glares before walking into our room and shutting the door behind us.
We didn't say anything, just started unpacking.
I hung up my movie posters first. They were creased from the move but still in decent shape.

(This is what the their bed looks like)
"I call top bunk!" Max announced, tossing her pillow up before climbing the ladder with a grin.
I let out a groan and dropped onto the bottom bunk, arms crossed.
Max peeked over the edge, clearly amused. "You know the rule, sis—"
"Whoever calls it first gets it. Yeah, yeah, I know," I muttered, pouting.
She chuckled. "Glad you remember."
Once we finished unpacking the essentials, the sky outside had darkened completely. Our new room felt strange, like someone else's house, but we didn't say anything. Instead, we changed into our pajamas and got ready for bed.
I flicked off the light, plunging the room into shadows. "Goodnight, Max."
"Night, Y/N," she replied softly.
And just like that, with nothing but the sound of quiet breathing and the hum of the house around us, we both drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Hey guys hoped you enjoyed the first chapter as much as I did writing it. Well see you on the next page.
