"Well, we can hang out for a little bit, relax, have a picnic maybe?" Dustin said, dripping with sarcasm.
"A picnic? We came here for the radio!" Erica yelled.
As the two of them argued, I noticed Robin moving up the stairs. I followed her quickly, and we both peered through the window in the door.
"Holy shit," I whispered, our eyes meeting in shock. We raced down toward the three knuckleheads.
"Guys," Robin interrupted their shouting.
"There's something up there," she said urgently.
We scrambled back up and opened the door leading to the blue light. Through the windows, we were stunned: a massive machine crackled with electricity, men in masks worked alongside a few at the computers, and arcs of power shot into the wall, creating that all-too-familiar rift—the entrance to the Upside Down.
"Holy shit," I breathed.
"The gate," Robin whispered.
-------------------
This can't be happening. Why are they trying to open a gate?
"I don't understand... you've seen this before?" Robin asked as we descended the stairs quickly.
"Not exactly," Steve said, eyes wide.
"Then what exactly?" she pressed.
"All you need to know is... it's bad," Dustin said urgently as we reached the bottom of the stairs.
"It's really bad," Steve and I echoed.
"Like... end-of-the-human-race-as-we-know-it kind of bad," Dustin added, making Robin frown.
"And you know about this how?" she asked, clearly annoyed at our evasiveness.
"Uh, Steve... where's your Russian friend?" Erica asked suddenly, making our heads snap to the floor. Only a dark blood splotch remained.
Steve bolted to the door, yanking it open as alarms blared. He slammed it shut and turned to us, panic written all over his face.
"Run! Go, go, go!" he yelled. We sprinted up the stairs, slamming doors behind us.
We burst through the last door, only to realize our mistake—we had run straight into the room full of doctors. Steve pushed open another door, and we scrambled inside as he slammed it shut behind us.
Down the stairs we went, shoving past people. Dustin let out a high-pitched scream as he collided with a guard.
At the end of the railing, the gate came into view, electricity dancing around its edges.
"Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! HOLY SHIT!" Dustin screamed, and we all gasped.
Guards were coming down the steps. We raced down another set, shoving past a guard and having Steve knock over barrels to slow pursuit.
We barreled through a door, slamming it shut behind us. Steve used every ounce of strength to hold it closed.
"This isn't gonna hold long!" curses flew from our mouths as we frantically searched for another exit. None appeared.
"Help me push!" Steve yelled. Robin and I rushed to his side, straining against the door.
"Here! Come on!" Erica called, lifting a vent with Dustin.
"Go! Just go!" I shouted.
"WILL AND MAX, WILL KILL ME!" Dustin screamed, panicked.
"It doesn't matter! Go already!" I yelled, pushing with all my strength while glancing back at him.
