The lab had finally shut down for good. Nancy's friend, Barbara Holland, had at last been given the long-overdue funeral she deserved, though her death remained carefully covered up.

But tonight, none of that was on my mind.

Tonight was the Snowball, and I couldn't have been more nervous.

"Ow, ow, that hurts!" Max complained as Mom worked on her hair.

"It's gonna be worth it, I promise," Mom said with a soft smile.

She'd already finished with my hair, so all I needed now was my dress. It was in mine and Max's room.

As I made my way down the hallway, I passed Billy. I quickly turned my head away—I didn't want to see him, didn't even want to acknowledge him.

Once inside the room, I walked over to my dress and slipped it on. Turning to the mirror, I took a deep breath and looked at myself.

I looked at myself in the mirror. I'd never really been a dress person, but tonight was different—this was for someone special.

I'd had crushes before, sure, but never like this.

"Wow, you must've fallen hard for him, Y/N," a voice said from the doorway.

I turned to see Max standing there with a smirk on her face. I felt my cheeks warm. She'd figured out my crush on Will weeks ago. According to her, it was obvious. And to be fair, she'd never seen me in a dress before.

"It's just a little something..." I muttered, brushing off the compliment. "And you can't talk."

"'Just a little something,' huh? And what's that supposed to mean, I can't talk?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
