~Y/n POV~

We had parked the camper in a big open field, spreading out to work on our weapons.

Dustin and Eddie were hammering nails into garbage can lids, turning them into makeshift spiked shields.

Nancy, Max, and I were crouched a short distance away, sawing off the tip of Nancy's gun so she'd have better aim, and less of a chance of blowing something important up.

Erica and Lucas were nearby, working on spears made from knives and wood.

Robin and Steve were a little farther off, carefully filling glass bottles with gasoline and stuffing cloth into the tops to make Molotov cocktails.

It felt unreal, like we were playing dress-up for a war that hadn't officially started yet.

"Is this legal?" Max asked, watching Nancy carefully saw through the metal.

I held the other end steady, pressing down to keep it from slipping.

"Actually, I think it's a felony," Nancy said without looking up.

"That's comforting," I said, letting out a small chuckle. Nancy smiled briefly but stayed focused.

"But it does guarantee us one thing," she added, adjusting her grip. "I won't miss."

A few seconds later, the tip finally snapped free, clattering onto the dirt. Nancy straightened up, inspecting her work.

I stood, brushing dirt from my hands. "Well, as much as I would love to stay with you pretty ladies—"

Both Max and Nancy rolled their eyes, smiling.

"—I promised Erica I wouldn't leave her alone with Lucas too long," I finished, already stepping away.

Nancy nodded "okay."

I started walking towards the two Sinclair's. As I got closer, Eddie's voice rang out across the field.

"Hey, Sinclairs! How are those, uh... those spears coming along?"

Lucas lifted his thumb in response.

"Flip that damn thumb around," Erica scoffed glancing up once, continuing to wrap string tightly around the knife and wood.

I dropped down beside them, grabbing another knife and long stick of wood. I then started working on my own spear, copying Erica's method instead of Lucas's.

Lucas glanced between Erica and me, clearly confused. Both of their spears were nearly finished.

Erica sighed, snatched Lucas's spear out of his hands, and immediately began unwrapping the string.

"It's too loose, Lucas," she said, like the answer should've been obvious to anyone with eyes.

"This isn't a basketball game where they blow the whistle when your shoes fall off."

I bit my lip, keeping my head down as I worked, but my shoulders shook anyway.

She always managed to cut straight through people. No yelling, no effort, just a few well, placed words that left absolutely nothing to argue with.

But obviously, Lucas argued anyway. It was the sibling way.

"Okay, okay, for the record, my shoes never fell off," Lucas said.

"Okay, for the record, it's kinda hard for your shoes to fall off when you're riding the bench," Erica shot back calmly, not even looking at him.

"Yet for some reason, you show up to every game," he replied, a smug smile tugging at his face.
