~Y/n POV~
"Why am I the one who has to go in again?" Max muttered, barely looking at me, her tone sharp and fed up.
"Because you've talked to her more than I have," I said, keeping my voice flat. No point arguing, she wasn't going to like any answer.
"That's a shitty reason."
Steve groaned from the front seat.
"Can you two just stop arguing and make a decision already?" he snapped, clearly done with both of us.
Max rolled her eyes, shoved the car door open, and slammed it harder than necessary before heading toward Ms. Kelly's house, no glance back, no shared look, nothing.
"You could slam it harder," Steve muttered sarcastically.
We watched from the car as Max rang the doorbell. The door opened a moment later, revealing Ms. Kelly. Max didn't look at us this time; she just stepped inside. The door shut behind her with a soft click that made the car feel too quiet.
"Okay, she's in," Steve said, like we hadn't all literally just watched Max walk into the house.
"I'm missing collarbones, not eyes," Dustin replied dryly as he adjusted his hat.
I let out a tiny breath, trying to ignore the tight feeling in my chest. Max never even looked back at me. Not that she had any reason to anymore.
"So... are we gonna talk about it?" Dustin asked. I glanced over at him, eyebrows raised.
"Huh? Sorry. Talk about what?" Steve asked, frowning at him.
"Your temporary insanity earlier today," Dustin said. "You know, when you basically threw yourself at Nancy."
I rolled my eyes and looked out the window. They had been arguing about this for a while. And honestly, it was painfully obvious Steve still had feelings for Nancy. Anyone with half a brain could see it.
"Okay, first of all, that is not what happened," Steve said, instantly defensive, his voice going up half an octave.
"Definitely what happened."
"Pretty sure that's what happened," Dustin and I said at the same time.
Steve groaned. "You two are impossible."
"It was pretty public. There were a lot of witnesses," Dustin said, folding his arms like a tiny, judgmental parent.
Steve twisted in his seat. "Are you implying that I still have a thing for Nance?"
"I'm not implying, I'm stating. And when you combine that with your steadfast refusal to date Robin, it's pretty much the only logical explanation," Dustin said.
I had to bite back a smile. Nobody could call Steve out like Dustin could.
"That is not the only explanation," Steve shot back. "And as for Nance, I was just trying to protect a friend."
Dustin nodded his head with a ridiculous smug grin.
"A friend, Henderson. A friend," Steve insisted, pointing at him like the word alone proved something.
"Okay."
Steve huffed. "I mean it. I don't want to find her in the morning with her eyes sucked out of her skull by this Vecna creep."
Dustin broke out into a laugh. "You're like bright red in the face right now."
"No, I'm not," Steve said quickly. "And I don't want to talk about it. I'll punch you so hard your teeth will fall back out."
