—| listen before I go |—
Samuel Hawkins found himself starring at the rubble of the house. He knew this day would come and he should've been prepared. He couldn't help, but blame himself for all that had happened.
He muttered a few words, cursing himself and asking for forgiveness from his dead wife. Telling her how sorry he was for almost not keeping their daughter safe. How he should've protected her more.
Know it was because of him thatThey had to go back to Vestrea, back to where Lydia had died. He never wanted to go back to the same place where she had taken her final breath. It would just consume him in more guilt when he'd arrive.
Though he did miss his fellow friends of the Skyler castles. The senator and the empress were amongst those few. They knew why he didn't want to go back, but here he was....going back to Vestrea.
"Dad!" Lyris called from behind him. He jolted his head towards her to see the box of clothes and other sorts of things that fit into the box. He immediately rushed over to her.
"Where did you get all this stuff?" He inquired.
"Lyris gave me one of her bracelets that she knew I loved, my Jean jacket, a few picture frames from Davina....Oh! And the earrings that Issac and I found at the store..." Lyris began to rant on and on about what she had before pulling out a stuffed toy.
Samuel recognized the toy right away....it wanst one he could easily forget. He'd recognize the red hair on the doll with its hand around a golden rose. Just seeing the toy almost brought him to tears.
Lydia had given Lyris that doll when they were searching for stuff for her. They had everything planned out then, but then again nothing lasts forever. And he learned it that day Lydia died.
He remembered telling Lyris when she was younger at night, when she still liked wearing nightgowns and headbands. When she was still tiny enough to fit into his arms, but he always treasured when he'd tell her about how her mother loved the doll that her mother gave her. Though it slightly broke him inside just by the sight of the doll.
"You're keeping it?" Samuel asked.
"That it is Diana," Lyris corrected him, "And yeah.......I think I'd like to keep it."
"How did it survive the place blowing up?" Samuel asked.
"Dad! This thing is made of the strongest fabric ever!" Lyris exclaimed, cheekily smiling, "Ithink that's why mom wanted me to have it. She wanted me to never let go of something that was like hers.......so I could remember her."
What she said almost made Samuel feel as if he'd collapse. He plastered a smile on his face, trying to seem string to his daughter, hiding how her sweetness tugged at his heartstrings.
"Alright-if that's what you want," Samuel told her, helping her to put the box in the car, "But seriously no books?"
"Don't we have a little bit of time to stop at the Asimov bookstore?" Lyris questioned him.
