Chapter 47

Caitlan's POV:

It's Evie's birthday! I've made her a hamper with some handmade lotions and face masks that me and mum had made - we've even come up with a lotion to wash, made with oils and no water needed. Me and Zac have planned a surprise party for her too. I also asked Evie's dad if I could borrow a photo of her mum, I also got a heart shaped locket for her and at home I used my magic to duplicate it and fit it into the locket. "Evie will love these, sweetheart" mum smiled as she came into the Grotto. "What's your plan of action for today?" I asked mum. "Got a teacher training day at the school. I'll be back this evening" mum gave me a hug before leaving.

I got changed for Evie's party, and headed to the Library to pass some time - I headed to the bakery first. Uncle Max was teaching, but everyone had big smiles when they saw me.  I gave them the sweet treats I bought from the bakery. "Did I ever tell you that you're my favourite niece?" Uncle Max winked. I laughed and grabbed a cupcake and shoved it in his face. "Love you too Uncle Max" Lily, Ruksy, Imogen and Darra all burst into laughter. "Hope I'm not intruding by the way? Just came to pass some time before Evie's party" I asked. "Cait, you are family. You would never be intruding." Uncle Max kissed my cheek, smothering buttercream on my face.

Ladder scooted up to me and knocked me over, so I'd sit on him. He took me back to the MerWorld section. I had a good browse and saw a book which included all the lost MerWorlds of the Seven Seas. The Lost City of Atlantis was in there. I was really enjoying the book. I then realised the time and headed over to Evie's.

I got to Evie's just as everyone was hiding. "SURPRISE" we all jumped out - it was Mimmi. Nobody's heard from Evie, I hope she's ok. Me, Zac and Mimmi were talking about how long we've known Evie. "Can't believe we've known her since we were six! The three of us have always been close and of course with David, Carly and Cam" I said in awe. "How long have you two known each other?" Mimmi asked. "Since we were babies!" Zac smiled. I started to dance with Sirena and Carly, but Zac ran off. Me, Sirena, Ondina and Mimmi followed.

Zac transformed and told us that Evie was in the fishbowl with the fish that Zac got her for her birthday - Mimmi mentioned she let Evie try on her Moon Ring, she must have shrunk herself and fell in. Sirena went and got the bowl and she and Ondina made Evie the correct size. "You two arranged a surprise party for me?" Evie smiled. "Not so much of a surprise now" I laughed. Evie went to get changed and then we joined the party. We all danced and had fun. Evie opened her presents. "Oh wow thanks Cait" she gave me a hug when she opened the hamper and teared up with the locket.

After the party, I went home, and Mimmi, Sirena and Ondina went to Mako. I told mum about the day, it's been hectic and fun, but as always I missed mum.

A few days later, me and mum had a meeting with Doctor Ross, Mimmi tagged along. Me and mum linked arms as the four of us walked around the park, I zoned out most of the conversations. Me and mum went to Doctor Ross's office - mum needed to fill out some paperwork for the Marine Program at school. "Would you join me for dinner tonight?" Doctor Ross asked. I felt uncomfortable, mum noticed this. "I don't think that would be appropriate Doctor Ross" mum scolded slightly. "I meant the both of you, a business dinner." Doctor Ross stuttered. Yeah, I'm not buying it. "Thank you, but we have to politely decline." Mum smiled.

We met back up with Mimmi, who was being escorted by a worker named Chris. Doctor Ross introduced them and he told mum that if any of her students need a job, there's plenty. "Would you be interested?" Doctor Ross asked me. "Thank you for the offer, but I'm happy working for my Mum" politely declined.

Back at home, me and mum sat on the balcony. "I saw how uncomfortable you were sweetheart, I'm sorry" mum put her hand to my face. "It's not your fault mum. Doctor Ross likes you, he'd be a fool not to" I smiled. "I just hope his intentions aren't to expose us and his feelings towards you are genuine." "It's my job to protect you, baby girl. And I'm not interested in dating. I'm happy with my life just being you, me and of course the girls." Mum brought me into a hug.

The next morning, Mimmi came to the Grotto early and told Mum she was thinking of getting a job. "Do you think Doctor Ross will give me a job at the marine park?" She asked timidly. We told her to go for it. "Will you come with me Cait?" Mimmi asked. "Course I will" I smiled. We linked arms and headed to the marine park.

Doctor Ross's face lit up when he saw me. "Change of heart Miss Santos?" He asked hopefully. "I'm afraid not. My cousin, Mimmi here wants to apply for a job" I smiled. "That's if there's any for me?" Mimmi asked shyly. "Of course there is!" Doctor Ross beamed. We went to Doctor Ross's office and he gave Mimmi the job of selling sea-life teddies,and she went to set up. "Are you sure you wouldn't like a job here Caitlan?" Doctor Ross asked again. "One hundred percent positive, I appreciate the offer though" I smiled and left.

I went for a quick swim before meeting mum at school. "Hey mum" I said and sat down. "Hey sweetheart, how's Mimmi?" Mum asked and I told her she's got a job selling teddies. "Oh; before I forget. Max called and said he has to go to the DMI this afternoon, and asked if I'd cover his teaching and you'd cover the shop?" Mum told me. "Sounds like a plan" I smiled.

After school, we headed to the book shop. Mum went to the library and I plonked myself down at the desk. Not long after, someone came in. "Hey Cait!" I heard. It was Cleo, her father and sister Kim. "Hey, what's up?" I smiled. "Is Maxwell about?" Mr Sertori asked. "He's just popped out." I replied and mum appeared and came to the desk. "Don?" She said confused. "Rita!?" Mr Sertori was just as confused. "Ummm what's happening?" Kim interrupted. "You're Rita and Harry's daughter?" Mr Sertori asked me and I nodded. "How do you know my dad?" I asked bewildered. "He was my little brother. Same mum, different dad" Mr Sertori told me. "He knows the secret, Cait." Mum told me. "You mean the secret of you being born mermaids and Max being an elf?" Mr Sertori blurted. "What? You knew the entire time?" Cleo stuttered. "Of course I knew!" Her dad said. "So I was right that time when I tried to expose you? I knew it!" Kim smugly said. "Don't even think about telling a soul Kim! Also, Caitlan you can call me Uncle Don" he smiled. "So, we're cousins?" Cleo smiled at me. "Looks like it." I smiled back. "But how did Cleo become a mermaid?" Kim asked. "The Moon Pool on Mako" Cleo told her. "It's not fair, why can't I be one?" Kim whined. "Go to Mako tonight, we can ask Mimmi to make a Full Moon spell." Mum told her. "Isn't that against the mermaid rules though mum?" I asked. "We're already cast out of the pod" mum shrugged.

I went to the marine park and told Mimmi everything, she said she was happy to help. She also told me she overheard Chris talking to Doctor Ross about the Dolphin Program and she wants to help. I told her to do what she thinks is best.

Me, Mum and Mimmi met Cleo, Kim and Uncle Don at the Moon Pool. We told Kim to jump in as Mimmi used the spell. After the spell had complete; we told them to come by ours tomorrow.

Mimmi left early the next morning to help Chris. Cleo, Uncle Don, Kim and Sam (Cleo and Kim's stepmum) arrived at ours. They followed us through the passageway to the Cavern - they thought the secret passage was amazing. "I guess it's time to see if the spell worked" mum smiled and Kim jumped into the pool; she gained a tail. "This is so cool!" She said in awe. "Remember though; we can't expose our secret" mum warned and Kim nodded understandingly.

The six of us headed to the Grotto. Uncle Don saw the photo of Mum and Dad and smiled sadly. Uncle Max then appeared. "Looks like I've missed all the fun" he said. "Nah. The fun is only beginning!" I winked and we all laughed.

Later in the day, Sirena joined me, and then so did Mimmi. Mimmi gave Sirena a dolphin teddy and told us that Chris got into the Dolphin Program, but it's in America. I can tell Mimmi really likes Chris. She told us that she helped him to bond with the dolphins but he kept his eyes closed whilst she was in the water, so that our secret wasn't exposed.
