Deacon

"What has gotten into you tonight?" Logan's dad asks. And I don't rightly know other than my mind is not on the game nor my hand of cards right now. I've never lost a game well okay, maybe the odd one or two here but this hand is downright awful.

"Ah, nothing. Mind on something else." I say and throw my hand in. "I'm out." I say. Logan raises his eyebrows.

"No way?" He smirks.

"Yes way." I take a swig of my beer. I've been nursing the same bottle for the last hour.

"You're not drinking either, Son." His old man says.

"No, Sir. I'm thinking of heading over to Lazy Duke's in a while see what's going on there."

"And would that be because my sister happens to be out there this fine evening?" Logan chuckles again, his brown with hazel eyes are full of merriment. He's had a couple of drinks himself. To be fair, Logan never gets drunk, he's always stuck at two, the max I've seen him drink is three drinks. Other than when Sage left him here in Willowbrook when he was just eighteen years of age.

He thought they had their futures planned out only she decided to leave for Michigan State to follow her medical career dreams and he didn't follow her. Nursing a broken heart sure did see the bottom of a lot of whiskey bottles and beer bottles. Thankfully, his old man spoke some sense into him and told him that if it was meant to be it would happen, maybe not that year or the year after but that The Lord had ways. And look at them know. Ten years later and we'll all be celebrating their marriage.

"Don't be ridiculous. I always go to see Abe and have a beer or two. I hear there's a good band on tonight and the ladies are also doing karaoke. I kind of think it'd be fun to go take a look." Is all I'm saying. Logan can see right through me, so can his pop who is smiling.

"Son, you need to do something about this situation. If she is the one then you gotta tell her." He tells me and pats my hand.

"Easy for you to say, only she's ten years younger than me and we're just good friends is all, Sir. You know she's after a man who is more her own age, you only have to see her around town."

"That's just flirting, she's a pretty girl, the boys like her but she needs a man." He tells me. Pats my hand and knocks back his whiskey.

"Okay, who wants another hand or are we calling it quits?" Logan's dad asks. Logan looks at me and cocks his head.

"We'll call it quits, Pop. Besides, I kind of like the idea of going to check on the girls. I heard there were some guys over from Coppertown, you know the new crowd. I wouldn't mind making sure the ladies are okay."

"Tshk, you young guns, you worry too much. Those ladies can look after themselves, besides you got Abe behind the bar, he can handle any man who starts anything in his bar." Logan's dad is right there, you'd have to be a fool to mess around in Abe's bar. The man is a mountain, and covered in tatts.

"C'mon Deacon, let's go check on the ladies." Logan says as he folds his hand of cards too. His pop scrapes the money off the table and gives us a nod. He earned his cash tonight fair and square. Am I sore I lost, yeah a little. That's what happens when you're thinking of a beautiful woman, with golden flowing hair, blue eyes and a smile that lights up the darkest sky at night.

I follow Logan as his dad closes the door behind us to his office. We've been playing at Logan's dad's house this time, we take it turns to host our poker nights. I had headed over to Logan's cabin which is nestled close to mine and came down in my truck giving him a lift. I did have every intention of having a couple of drinks but knew in the back of my mind, I'd be heading over to Abe's bar to check the status out.

I don't like it when I hear there's a new set of guys in town, makes me nervous. We're a small community here, everyone trusts everyone but with the new development over in Coppertown some new folks have been coming through. You can take the man out of the marshal, but you can never take the marshal out of the man as they say.

A few minutes later, I'm in my truck and we're heading over to Lazy Duke's. "Pop is right, you should just come right out and tell Daisy. I have no issues with you dating my kid sister." And there you have it, the word kid. It hits the nail right on the head. Daisy is his kid sister, always will be but damn it if I don't fancy that woman something bad.

"Ten year age gap, Logan may not be a lot to some folk but to me it is and trust me, it will be to Daisy. I'm going to be forty in a few years time and she's only going to be heading into thirty. Our outlook will be different, who knows one day she may decide to do a Sage on me, upsticks and want to go and travel the world or something. Daisy has only ever been here in Willowbrook except for your family vacations three times a year. That girl has never gotten on a plane and travelled."

"Aw, Man she isn't like that. Daisy has her business here, she loves Willowbrook, she lives and breathes it. Besides, there will be no taking Daisy away from our folks. You know how much she adores my mom and pop." Yeah, that is true but you never can tell. Whoever thought Sage would decide at eighteen to head off to Minnesota, but she did.

"I'll just have to wait some and see, Logan. She has a lot of growing up to do first." I don't want to even think whether she is still an innocent. Shit, I best not think about that whilst I'm sitting next to my best friend, in my truck about whether his kid sister is still a virgin or not. I groan inwardly.

Why couldn't I have feelings for someone else, anyone else? I mean, there are plenty of single women here in Willowbrook, I know several would love to be on my arm, they make it obvious enough.

Logan slaps me on my leg. "It will be what it'll be." He pulls up in front of the bar, we hear the music as we step out of his truck. There are a few people outside by the fire pits smoking, some drinking, there is laughter, twinkling lights on the front porch of above the entrance door and a couple kissing against one of the cars. Your usual at the Lazy Duke's bar.

Logan heads towards the door in front of me and I follow on his heels. He opens the door and enters, there is a woman on stage singing along to the karaoke machine, I hate to say it but I've heard cats sing better, fair play to her for getting up and having herself some fun though.

Then I spot her, with her long hair flowing down her back, some guy has his hand on her lower back but Daisy looks as if she is trying to push him off. The jerk seems persistent to me and is lowering his head so his mouth is close to her ear. I see Daisy trying to pull away. Sage glances up and sees both Logan and myself step into the bar. She glances at the jerk and raises her eyebrows.

Looks like the ladies could do with some help.
