Deacon
"That didn't go too well last night, did it Bro?" Logan says as I tuck into my pancakes at Bluebell's wondering if Daisy will be in this morning or if she's nursing a helluva hangover. I'm going with the hangover. Perhaps I ought to go and check up on her, that's what a good friend would do.
Lottie comes in with Sage, they aren't looking too clever themselves, but then the ladies did manage to put some drink away. They slide in next to Logan and I.
"Hey, Deacon. Saw you throwing Daisy over your shoulder in the car park last night. How did that work out for you?" Lottie asks with a playful smirk on her face.
"Not too well, I dropped her off and was told to get out of there."
"I'm not surprised, a lady only likes that kind of action when she's getting some."
That almost makes me choke on my pancake. Honestly, these younger girls have no shame, they're so open about sex that it makes me blush. Yes, a grown man like myself who has been round the block and then some, blushing.
"You okay?" Sage asks. I nod. Babs approaches the table.
"What can I get you ladies?"
"I'll have two rounds of pancakes with extra maple syrup, and a very strong coffee please, Babs." Sage requests.
"And I'll have the waffles with scrambled egg and bacon strips, and second that on the strong coffee please." Lottie chips in.
"You ladies have a hangover?" I ask raising my eyebrows at them. Lottie sticks her tongue out at me. "Have you spoken to Daisy yet this morning?" I ask her.
"Nope. I did message her, she's got a hangover and may not open the shop up today." She plays wit the napkin holder. Sage grabs her hand to make her stop.
Logan pushes his empty plate aside, "that was delicious. So, the fundraiser, we're all set?"
"Just about. I've got mom on the bake sale with your mom, Daisy and Sadie are doing craft stalls, you're on the band and Deacon is on the dunking machine." Sage tells him. That makes me groan, I'd almost forgotten I said I would do it again this year. Great, my favorite thing – not, is to have balls thrown in my direction which upon contact with the board make me fall into the water beneath.
"Maybe I should go check on Daisy. See if she needs anything." I say absentmindedly. All eyes are on me, Logan's eyebrows are raised.
"You think that's a good idea, you're in her bad books? You can't manhandle a woman like you did and expect her to open the door to you the next day." He informs me.
The thing is though, if Daisy isn't opening up today and stays at home to nurse her hangover, I won't get to see her and I just can't help but want to see that pretty face of hers and her enigmatic smile. Although, I doubt today she has a whole lot to smile about.
"How are the wedding plans coming on, what did I miss last night?" I ask as I wait for my coffee to be refilled by Babs who has just bought the girls' plates of food over.
"Well, you missed quite a bit actually. Logan and I have decided rather than having separate pre wedding parties, that we'll hire a cabin up in the mountains and we can have a get together all of us. Feel free to bring anyone you like, Deacon since we'll be mostly couples." Sage is clearly excited about this and to be honest it sounds a great idea.
"Except me, I don't have any plus one and whilst I'm thinking about it nor does Daisy." Lottie chips in.
"Ah, right. I though you were sort of seeing that fella from Coppertown. Has that all fizzled out now?" Sage asks as she looks at Lottie.
"I wasn't seeing him seeing him, we were you know just hooking up from time to time."
"Too much information, stop right there, Lottie." I tell her before she goes any further.
"I could bring him though, I don't want to be the only one without a plus one." Lottie looks as if she is deliberating it, she'll probably end up bringing whoever it is the ladies are talking about.
Sage nods. "Perfect. Eliza and her husband are coming, Sadie said she is going to be bring Tyler, her on-off fella. So, that just leaves you and Daisy, Deacon." She has a weird grin on her face.
"Ladies, Logan, I have to go to the station." I get up and leave a twenty on the table to cover my breakfast, first I need to go round and check in on Daisy. I kind of feel bad for throwing her over my shoulder last night, Logan is right, I shouldn't have done that.
On my drive over, I ponder on whether this is a good thing or not, but at the very least I should apologize to her. I stop off at the pharmacy and buy some Ibuprofen just in case Daisy doesn't have any in and some chocolates they have in one of the aisles. All girls love chocolate, right?
I wait outside a few seconds after I've knocked on the door. I know she's in there since her car is on the car port, unless she has decided to walk to the shop maybe to clear her head.
"What do you want, Deacon?" I hear from the other side of the door.
"To say I'm sorry about last night." Silence.
"Okay, thanks. You can go now."
"I brought you some Ibuprofen and chocolates. You want them? How are you feeling?"
"I'd feel better if someone hadn't thrown me over their shoulder for the whole world to see and made a fool out of me. You do know someone has posted a picture of that on Instagram, right? With comments about how the Marshal was heavy handed with one of the Willowbrook community members." Silence. I shuffle.
"I'm truly sorry, Daisy. Will you just open up please?"
"No."
"Please."
Silence then, "and the worst thing is I look awful, it's not even a good picture of me. Good job they didn't get the ass end."
I suppress a chuckle, okay it's not that funny but if that's all she has to worry about then she can't be feeling too hungover this morning.
"Leave the pain killers on the porch and those chocolates I can see you have in your hand. I'm still not talking to you."
"I'll catch you later, Daisy. If you need anything be sure to give me a shout."
"Not happening you disgraced me in front of everyone in town."
I chuckle. "I heard that, it's not a laughing matter, Deacon. It's embarrassing as hell. What will my customer's think? They're going to think I'm a disorderly drunken woman."
"I'm sure they won't. Everyone in town loves and knows you, Daisy. Besides, you are entitled to let off steam every now and then."
"Goodbye, Deacon."
I step back after placing the Ibuprofen and chocolates down on the porch as requested and head off to my truck. As I get in the cab, I see her slender arm coming through the slightly ajar door and grab the chocolates first then the pain relief. The door quickly closes. I can't help but laugh, that girl, she's really got my heart and soul.
And one day soon, I'm going to come right out and tell her.
