We walked outside on guard while Carina reached her hand behind her back, ready to protect me while holding her weapon in the air. “What do you think it is?” I tightly grasped onto her stretched-out arm, but her focus was on the threat rather than answering my question. I peep over her shoulders ahead, seeing the disruption of the forest branches pushing forward as though some gigantic thing is coming into our path.

“Oh my goodness, what is that?”

“Be ready to flee, Gemma,” she said in panic. It was closing in fast for my taste.

“Should I leave?” It was moving in, and the fear in my legs had me antsy prepared to high-horse it out of there. “Carina?” I let go of her, stepping backward, searching in every direction while this thing was not slowing down. “Hey, I think.”

“Run now!” She shouted but grabbed my pullover, keeping me from rushing off and screaming, “Run, Gemma, run!”

I scramble aside, not traveling anywhere as I attempt to yank my clothes out of her hands. “Let me go!” As it looks like an oversized bush is about to smash us into the dirt. I screamed for my life as it came just a few feet away, and she released me, laughing her tail off as the thing stopped. “What the hell?”

“You make it too easy.” Her chuckles aired with a few sniffs. “This is too good.”

“Now that I think about it. You and Quinn would form a lovely couple.” I pushed her a bit as she growled at my statement. “Merely, an observation.”

“What’s going on?” Bora laid the chopped-in-half tree.

“Nothing, just Carina goofing.” I wrapped my arms around his sweaty neck as he pulled me in to offer loving kisses. “Hmm, wanna have a series of more rounds?” I squeezed him closer, knowing that now we both had to shower with his dirty white beater and falling off leaves. I plan to give him no room to breathe.

“Sure. If you promise not to stop me this time.” He smirked.

“Of course. I don’t think it can happen, anyway.”

“You two get on my nerves.” Carina scuffed and headed into the house.

Bora and I laughed, and then he gazed with intent. “Why do you say that?”

“Oh.” I released him. “It’s a long story.” I put my hands in my pocket. “And probably not the best moment to talk about it.”

“I got time.” He furrowed his brows, curious.

“I hear you, but.”

“Hey, lovebirds.” Malinda and the rest of the gang walked up with bags of supplies. I waved while Bora let me go to grab it from her grasp. “How are you feeling?” She placed an arm over my shoulders, squeezing me like a mother would a daughter.

“I’m okay. It is surprising how all this unfolded. But I am good.”

“You could say that again.” She dropped her arms, putting her hands into her jacket pockets and turning to me. “It is a shock for all of us. I experienced little about werewolves and what their bodies can take. There is something I need to mention to you. I traveled to Alaska to locate him. Adam and I couldn’t find his body.”
