"He's the one who saved me."
Bora's bloodshot veins in his eyes found me amid us, and then Xannon as he shrunk back into his human form. I threw some clothes at him, and he caught it, giving me a loving smile. "Thank you for saving her," he uttered to him, sliding up his jeans. "You have my gratitude."
"You grew up," Xannon admitted, but Bora looked as though that was the most obscured response he ever heard smashing his lips.
"We all do. Part of nature," seeming more annoyed.
"You don't know who I am, do you?"
I stand on the edge of my toes, wondering. No. He couldn't be. There was a resemblance as I waited for my love to answer. "Let me take a wild guess. My father? Yeah, I know. My uncle told me all about you back at the tribe. Tell me, how could you allow my mother to get murdered? Better yet, why is Cage so adamant about destroying our family? He even went as far as going after my mate. What did you do that I have to clean up?"
"You sound upset." These were the words that came out of his mouth in a sarcastic tone. Is he trying to piss off Bora? This is not looking good. Adam and Carina morphed into their human form and backed away to give them space. Strangely, their clothes didn't rip at all. I wonder how they did that?
"Ha. Those are fighting words." Quinn caught my attention with that statement, cracking up with a toothpick in his mouth while resting on his motorcycle. I shushed him before he made things worse, but Bora snapped a growl. Too late. I glanced back at Que, evilly eyeing him, and he threw up his hands. "What? I only said what everyone was thinking."
I turned to Bora to reason with him. "It's okay. I'm sure he meant nothing by it."
"Perhaps." Xan's sly statement caused me to glare at him. "Except, are you mad because he went after your mother or your human mate? Seeming that you chose weak flesh over kind." We couldn't believe what came out of Xannon's mouth. If he felt that way, then why did he save me? He should just oblige Cage to take me out of my misery. Is it all an act?
"Bora, don't let him talk to you like that. Blood or not, kick his ass." Quinn edges on.
"Hey! Not helping." I fussed at him and acted back because of the wrath impact of Bora's outburst as he morphed into form diving at his father. "Wait!" But they had already gone into the woods. My brother ran past me, uttering. I can't miss this battle, like he was watching a boxing match along with Adam and Carina high-tailing it with excitement. This is not a game. Someone could get hurt. I turned to Malinda, Miska, and Wooly. "Can you stop this?" I pointed toward the grove.
"What? A father and son brawl? It's fine. He is testing his strength." Woolly strolls towards me in a relaxed, charming manner. "I don't think we properly met. My name is Wooly Elim, the glue that holds the Alaskan house, and a personal advisor for Miska Iqua, Luna, the heroine of the Loners Ark." The way he introduced her with so much pride.
"I see and hear everything, but you, my dear, slipped by." He held out his hand to shake mine as I gave it to him but discreetly yanked me in to be close to my ear. "Careful. She plans to kill you," He uttered. My eyes tread toward her, giving me the death stare, cold enough to send a chill down my spine. "She is Bora's arranged mate. He will be the Alpha for the Loners Ark Tribe." He backed away from me playfully with a diabolical smile.
The air of qualm surrounding me clogged my windpipes as gravity tugged my core to my toes. Is this what it feels like to sense death? Malinda hugged my shoulders, which urged me to flinch. "We should leave them to it, yeah?" She held me to her as we walked to the front door. The eerie sound of blades sharpening made my arms shiver. We paused, and she sighed, bent me over to block Miska's swing, and kicked her away. "Go inside, Gemma!" She exploded, shoving me forward.
I stumbled to make my way to the house, but Wooly blocked my path. "You see, the funny thing is, our Alpha is confused. You can not bear children, which poses a threat to us because you can't give birth to an heir. So you are not fit for this job, dear. And since he is weak, we shall handle this now."
"You will overthrow the Alpha?" I used language to compel him to quit.
"He hasn't accepted it." He smirked. "Which means there is no one to listen to."
He hauls his fist back, and Carina side-kicks him as he flies into some logs stacked up on the face of the house. "What the hell is going on here?" She was on guard, waiting for him to get up. I turned to Malinda and Miska at a standoff.
"They're trying to kill me."
"No, we are not." Wooly stood up, dusting himself off. "We are merely doing the traditional ritual of fighting to win the mates' hearts.
"It's an unfair fight," Malinda argued.
"Not our fault. He chose her and so we chose this."
"You're wasting your time," Carina cackled. "Our ancestors were against these practices of forcing wolves together who they saw fit. But you can't beat the out-worldly connection that none of you understand. So give it a rest and have a couple of beers instead." She left us as we stood confused.
"What happened in the fight?" I wondered.
"They disappeared." Quinn walked past me while he and Adam worked back into the conversation, going into the home as well.
I turned to Miska as she looked off into the woods, letting her feet trail along with the wind in the grove. Wooly tapped my shoulder and held out his hand again. "No hard feelings?" But I stared at him. "I would not hurt you on my own. I was following orders." He stretched it closer to mine. I disregarded it going about my business.
You are supposed to be Alpha for the Loners Ark Tribe? News to me. But I have always known him to be great, so it's not surprising. I understand her aggression towards me now. Too bad. She will have to drown in her resentment.
