daphne

"daphne don't you need to get up soon?" my mom says through the door.

"what?"

"it's 8.15 am." mom says as she opens the door.

"no no no." i say in panic and get up and put on the first clothes that i find.

"i made you a sandwich so take that while i drive you to your car."

i'm in the library when i see leah walking in. i quickly look away and go back to focusing on my book.

"daphne."

"oh, leah."

"i just wanted to talk to you."

"why?" i ask unsure. our earlier encounters haven't been so nice.

"what you saw, i....could you please not tell sophia. or aiden." she says.

"tell aiden?"

"yeah i guess you guys are close enough for you to tell him that you saw me hook up with another guy?"

"another guy? that wasn't aiden?"

"fuck, you didn't see that?" she says and i shake my head.

"well you really can't tell him. pretend i didn't say this." she says and quickly leaves.

i'm on my way home from school when a car slows down next to me.

"get in." aiden says.

"i don't think that's-"

"get. in."

"fine." i mumble and get inside.

"you got some explaining to do." he says and begins to drive.

"explain what?"

"the last thing you told me."

"i have a bad memory and i was drunk as fuck so..."

"daphne."

"i went to open the bathroom door and i thought i saw you and leah...you know."

i hate this conversation.

"i haven't slept with her."

"right."

it's quiet and he parks the car close to the beach and goes out. i sit in the car for a few seconds but then join him at the bench.

"she slept with someone else and asked me not not tell you." i sigh.

"is that why you kissed that guy?"

"uh no? i wanted to, not because of you." i lie and he raises his eyebrows as he looks at me.

i look away and he chuckles.

"i guess you're happy about this. i know you didn't like her and now there's proof that she is an awful person, not just to you." he says and places a hand on his face and sighs.

"i don't like this. but i mean she wasn't really lovely."

"i should've defended you." he mumbles and i don't answer him.

it's quiet for a while and i enjoy the sound of the waves and the calmness.

"wanna know something?" he says and chuckles.

"what?" i smile unsure.

"i paid lily to leave our project."

"what?" i laugh.

"i know. it's bad."

"poor girl." i tease and he looks away and laughs in embarrassment.

"why though?"

"i...wanted to be with you. and not fight."

"only to get me in you bed?"

"no no, i mean you're hot, but no. i wanted to know you i guess." he shrugs.

"you guess?"

"yeah."

"well since you're here spilling the tea. did you beat alex up?"

he sighs and i laugh.

"i can't believe you." i say and he joins me in laughter.

"he made you upset. and only i get to do that."

"oh how nice." i say sarcastically.

"have you gotten any more texts?"

"uh yeah a few. the last one was to check the bathroom at the party actually."

"what? was it leah?" he asks.

"but why would she want me to see her?"

"that's true. anyways let me drive you back home." he says and i nod as we get into the car.
