My skin pricked with the inquisitive glances thrown my way as the two maids fussed around, laying different fabrics across the bed.

Remi had just left the room to confirm that the date was set as planned. He had called in these two maids before he left, instructing them to supply me with a nice casual outfit for whatever he had planned.

The two maids did their jobs well, but I could see their confusion. They probably wondered what a human was doing in their Alpha King's chambers and why said king was dressing her up.

Well, I couldn't blame them. I wanted to know what I was doing here as well. I never imagined that any of this could happen. Me, sitting here in the royal castle getting dolled up for a species I've hunted for a living.

"Is she a pet or something?" My eyebrows shot up as I glanced over at the whispering maids in the corner.

A pet?

"Whatever she is, I hope she has some shame, at least. Giving herself up for attention is just sad."

My eye twitched.

The two were whispering, their bodies positioned at a distance so that any normal person wouldn't have been able to hear them. But I wasn't normal. I heard more than I needed to.

I couldn't exactly say that it offended me, more like I didn't expect them to blatantly talk about it in front of me. Dealing with things like this was a hassle for me. As long as they didn't say it to my face, I had no problem ignoring it.

I cleared my throat and attracted their attention. I smiled and dismissed them before they really said something that'd piss me off. "You can leave now. I got it from here."

Both hesitated. "Are you sure?" One of them asked.

I nodded and pointed towards the door. "Yes, believe it or not. I've been dressing myself since I was 4."

My sarcasm must've struck a nerve for them because they frowned and nodded.

"She's only been here a day, and she's already arrogant."

"That's humans for you. They think they're above everyone else, but are so easy to kill."

They giggled to themselves as the door slammed shut behind them.

Kill them.

I narrowed my eyes as that unreasonable side of me reared its head. The malevolence that clung to my heart convulsed, threatening to leak out and do whatever the fuck it wanted.

They underestimate us. Kill them now.

A sharp pain shot through my head and I rasped for breath and clutched the dresser for support.

Kill them!

My body urged me to move towards the door, but I bit my tongue and stayed rooted. This was why I tried my best not to react to the people around me. If I ever allowed anyone to make me angry, it would all be over. Red would be all I see.
