Life really knew how to slap you in the face and keep your heart pumping.

This year I had turned twenty-nine. After years of trying to evade responsibility, my father finally grabbed me by the neck and forced me onto the throne last year.

Since then, I have been on the lookout for my mate. According to my mother, "Every king needed his queen."

I was never really in a rush to find her. Mates were typically drawn to each other. Even if we were born on different continents, one of us would end up crossing the ocean. That's what it meant to be tied by fate.

When I was younger, I cared little about finding my mate, however, witnessing the bond between my friend and his mate made me yearn for a bond like that.

So when I became king and everyone urged me to look, I didn't oppose it. I even planned a ball dedicated to finding her. Though it seemed my actions were useless.

I found her where I least expected.

Club Zero.

It wasn't a place I usually frequented, but this time was an exception. After investigating the death of Annabel, one of my kingdom's enforcers, my sources led me to this popular club that was neutral ground between humans and werewolves.

It took me a while to sense her presence. The crowded bodies rubbing against each other and the musty scent of sweat overwhelmed my senses and overshadowed her scent.

She smelt of lavender. I wasn't ashamed to admit that my knees had almost buckled when I picked up on it.

I wasn't planning to approach her immediately. One was because Derreck, my secretary, was already on my ass for not focusing on the task at hand, and two, because she was human. I didn't expect her to pick up on the connection between us. So imagine my surprise when I noticed her eyes already glued to my frame. It was surprising. Human mates had a harder time sensing the mate bond compared to wolves.

However, I soon realized that it was just a coincidence that her eyes landed on me as she came over to strike up a conversation. I quickly ran Jackob, my cardinal beta, off and focused my undivided attention on her. I didn't even remember what I originally came for.

I smiled and introduced myself. "I'm Remington, but everyone calls me Remi."

"Remi," my name rolled off her tongue and struck every nerve in my body until I almost spasmed. "I like your smile."

Deep, yet feminine. Soft, yet firm. That was her voice. I was ready to hear that voice strain with every emotion I planned to evoke in her. Whether it be anger, happiness... or pleasure. I wanted to hear it all. Engrave her voice into my soul so that even through blindness and the absence of sound, I'd hear her call my name.

It was a good thing she couldn't see my thoughts.

My smile widened at her compliment. "Thank you. Can I see yours?"
