I stared at the empty spot in the narrow street of the back alley as if I could see the body that was found there.

The wolves had long since cleaned up and removed all the evidence of there ever being a murder.

I pulled the hood over my head and bent down to place my finger against the pavement. My power seeped onto the ground and scattered like dust, revealing what wasn't there before.

The air shifted, and I could physically see the evil energy pulsing in the outline of a figure.

The assassin.

This wasn't something the wolves could sense, so I wasn't surprised that they didn't realize this was done by a single person.

However, this assassin was sloppy. Their control over their spirit was poor if I could sense them this easily. I looked in a specific direction with a frown on my face.

He hadn't strayed far from this alley, either. I didn't know if he was bold or just plain stupid. Eventually, the wolves would be able to find him, and the last thing I needed was information about me being exposed.

I had to find out why he was here.

I ran off in his direction and kept to the walls. Even with the sun still out, I slipped under the radar and bypassed a few patrol officers walking around. Compared to the inner city, the outer city's security was lax, making it a playground for many criminal activities.

I effortlessly scaled the wall of an old building until I got to the third floor. With how compact and close the buildings were, it was easy for me to climb up onto the small balcony.

My steps were indiscernible even to wolves as I crept toward the door.

In the back of my mind, my spirit blinked and watched with keen interest, awoken by the turmoil of emotions squeezing my heart. It fed into those emotions, my thoughts drifting to things unpleasant as I sensed the person within the apartment.

I took a deep breath and snuck in. The second I got through the door, a sharp blade swung towards my neck.

I sprung into action and dodged, quickly swinging my hand to knock the dagger from his hand and shove him against the wall. My elbow dug into his throat and my eyes focused on his face.

"You..." the malice bled from his face as he stared at me. "Celeste?"

I recognized him instantly. "Alec."

I released him and stepped back to put some space between us. Alec and I were considered rivals growing up. We'd always been competing against each other for the top trainee spot. I was surprised to see him here.

He furrowed his brows. "W-what are you doing here? Wait... this is where you've been hiding? We've looked everywhere for you."

I crossed my arms. "That's not important right now. Why did you come here? Based on your reaction, you didn't come for me."
