I'm a straightforward girl. I see what I like and I take it. It's been the same when I was little and it's still the same now. So when I went out clubbing with my friends that night and I saw this highly attractive guy, I just knew I had to have him...

"My lady, I've never quite struck you as the type to pick up a book," Anya commented as she stood next to me in the royal library.
I had found myself in a secluded corner, ignoring the glances and whispers of the wolves that passed now and then.
I had a book about werewolves opened in my lap, skimming through it with keen interest.
I absentmindedly replied to Anya. "Mm, I'm not. I'd much rather pick up a dagger than a book."
Anya, who stood next to me with her hands neatly folded behind her back, peered down at the book curiously. "Then why are you reading?"
I shrugged.
I needed to.
There were things I needed to figure out if I wanted to think of a future with Remi.
It was forbidden for an assassin to mate with a wolf.
I didn't know the reason, but my clan despised the thought. It was why they always buried news of one of our own being the soulmate of a werewolf.
I thought back on my sister's situation.
She fell in love with a werewolf who turned out to be her mate, but our mother refused their union. She warned my sister not to get involved with the wolves. That it was dangerous. My sister didn't listen. She ran off and mated with that wolf, allowing him to mark her.
When my mother found out, she was furious. She sent our people out to drag my sister and her mate back to the clan, and when they did, my mother killed the wolf herself.
My sister was devastated. She blamed herself for his death. I remembered scorning her for disobeying our mother, for interloping with a man who barked like a dog. The last time I saw her was the turning point for me.
I looked at Rhea with a frown as she sat on the bed, staring absentmindedly out of the window. Her fingers caressed the fading mark on her neck, her dead eyes lost to her surroundings.
I couldn't fathom why she acted like this. It was the first time I'd ever seen her so listless. Why? All for the sake of a wolf? Those filthy things?
"You're being pathetic," I said as I walked in and sat down beside her.
She turned her head to look at me, not a flicker of emotion in her eyes. I felt like she couldn't even comprehend what I had just said.
My body shivered, unnerved by her behavior. I shifted awkwardly, not knowing what to say, but feeling like I needed to cheer her up. "You... you'll be fine. Mother said love is fleeting. That man wasn't worth your time."
She released a shaky breath, and I finally saw a flicker of emotion. "How much should I sacrifice to be in this clan?" Her voice broke, rousing an uncomfortable feeling in my chest.
