I'm a straightforward girl. I see what I like and I take it. It's been the same when I was little and it's still the same now. So when I went out clubbing with my friends that night and I saw this highly attractive guy, I just knew I had to have him...

Murmurs broke out amongst the crowd as everyone turned to look at Theo's entrance. They seemed even livelier than when Remi and I made ours, their wariness and fear permeating the air.
I didn't blame them.
Theo gave off a savage energy that made you wary of him. His eyes were especially piercing, strong enough to cripple a master liar into telling the truth.
He walked in with two guards flanking his sides.
"Oh, Theo's here." Starr's eyes migrated towards the entrance. "The final piece to complete their secret plot."
You could tell that being left out bothered her.
I tried to hold back my smile and instead looked around the room. Although most of the attention was on Theo, others constantly glanced in my direction, their gazes inquisitive. I ignored them the best I could, but my entire body was stiff.
I couldn't help it, given the atmosphere.
To distract myself, I tried to make conversation with Starr. "Where are the old royals?" I asked, referring to Remi's parents.
"Over there," Starr pointed at a table close to us where Riana and Spencer stood conversing with Remi's uncle and a few other powerful alphas.
I tilted my head curiously as I observed them. They seemed at ease at first glance, but if you looked close enough, you'd notice that Spencer's hand never once left Riana's waist, while the other males were slightly turned in her direction as well.
The lengths to which a werewolf would go for his soulmate always amazed me.
I looked at the two twins standing at my side, close enough to reach me in case of an attack but far enough to give me the breathing air I needed. Starr's situation, however, wasn't as optimistic as mine. She had more guards, and by the way she kept peering around them, they were obstructing her view.
This was not how I'd envisioned the mating ball at all. The pretty ballgowns were there, the soft, slow pianist in the background set the ambience, sure, but too many people were on edge. No one looked relaxed or like they were enjoying themselves at a-
"Mine!" A growl suddenly pierced the air, attracting my attention.
I looked over just as the crowd parted to see a man stalking towards a crowd of women. One woman in the crowd trembled when her gaze clashed with his, and I watched as both their eyes glowed brilliantly.
Everyone moved out of their way, respecting the act of finding one's soulmate. The two barely noticed, however, fully entranced by each other.
The man reached the female and grabbed the back of her head. Then, in front of everyone, he growled and slammed his lips against hers, pulling her into a heated kiss.
My eyebrows shot up in surprise, and the words spilled from my lips unintentionally. "Oh, my. Just like that?"
Starr chuckled at my reaction and said. "That's the third couple since I entered. You should've seen the one before. The guy marked her on the spot. Quite hasty of him," she covered her mouth and giggled bashfully.
