"Oh wait pretty boy, what about that watch you are wearing, hand it to me." Hyunjin froze. Out of all days he had to wear his favourite gift and memory from Han, he had to wear that watch tonight.
Hyunjin felt dizzy. The world started shrinking and he heard ringing in his ears. Why did it feel like he was fighting all the time? Standing on one foot on burning ground. Everyone abandoned him or betrayed him. His mom, his dad, his brother, hi best friend, and now Felix didn't do anything either. Han was probably dying, and Hyunjin might not even get to say goodbye.
Then a thought came in his mind as he heard the guy in front of him saying, "Does it look like I have all day?!" Actually, he was shouting.
Hyunjin slid down the wall and whispered, "If I don't give it will you shoot me and take it off my dead body?"
The stranger looked at Hyunjin baffled as Hyunjin continued, "I would prefer that."
Hyunjin closed his eyes.
All he could hear was his own breath and heartbeat.
Then he felt a hot breath fanning against his ear.
Hyunjin shuddered.
Hyunjin opened his eyes as the stranger handed him back his phone and said, "I still have your wallet, that means I owe you. Goodbye silly boy."
The man walked away.
Next day at school,
Hyunjin walked to his locker and rummaged through his stuff. He felt someone tap his shoulder and he flinched turning around. Felix took a step back raising his hands in the air. Hyunjin let out a breath.
Felix gulped and said, "Han's ok. He has a fractured leg though, so he's on bed rest."
Hyunjin felt a weight being lifted off his shoulders and he nodded. Hyunjin went to walk away when Felix stopped him by grabbing his wrist. Hyunjin looked at Felix with a cold expression and Felix winced. "I'm sorry for what Lee Know did last night Hyunjin." Felix said and Hyunjin frowned.
He couldn't feel anything.
"It's ok, he was just 'protecting' Han from me." Hyunjin replied trying not to sound cold. His chest hurt. Maybe his ribs were bruised from last night. His father was furious when Hyunjin reached home, for jumping out of the car.
Felix said, "No, it's not your fault, Lee Know felt terrible for what he did after that."
Hyunjin chuckled darkly, "Does him feeling bad about hurting me fix everything?"
Felix stared and shook his head. Hyunjin walked away.
Meanwhile,
IN and Changbin were waiting for Lee Know, Felix, and Han to come to class. They were never late and the trio wasn't picking up their calls either. Seungmin and Chan couldn't help in this matter. But they sure were developing a good friendship.
"You don't really talk so much do you?" Chan asked Seungmin as they walked outside school in the sun, looking up at the bright sky. There were barely any clouds and the atmosphere felt so fresh and real. They could hear the birds celebrating the serene day, and the rustling of dry leaves by the faint wind.
"I only talk when it's important." Seungmin answered.
"And why is that?"
"Because most people find me annoying."
"I'm not that 'most people', right?"
Seungmin looked at Chan who was looking back at him nervously.
"No."
Chan smiled. Seungmin liked his smile. Seungmin said, "So, what does your old man do?"
Chan smiled looking down, "He's uh... he left when I was five. I live with my mom and my sister."
Seungmin's smile dropped, "Sorry."
"Naur, don't worry! Ma said he was an alcoholic anyways. We were lucky." Chan said.
Seungmin nodded, "So, what about your mom?"
"She works in a cafe. I mean, works at a cafeteria. She's in charge of the financial bills, taxes, basically money stuff." Chan replied.
"My dad is a policeman and my mom is a doctor." Seungmin said and Chan paused in his tracks. Then he burst out laughing.
"Wait, that's so cool." Chan said in between his laughter. Seungmin frowned, "How is it cool if you're laughing?"
Chan said, "If you don't want to be at school you could just act to be depressed until a teacher asks and say that your mom 'is at the hospital and dad in the police station'. I bet you'd get to go home free! Or at least a sympathy ticket."
Seungmin chuckled, "What about if the teacher asks why? I should lie and say my dad is a criminal and my mom is sick? In front of a whole class? To a teacher? How will I 'act' depressed? Or worse, what if the teacher sends me to a councillor!"
Chan burst out laughing again. "I mean, you don't like to talk anyways so no-one will question if you stay quiet!"
Why were they having this conversation?
Both of them laughed and went to class before the bell rang.
Lunch time,
Hyunjin sighed looking around the noisy lunch hall. He spotted Felix at his usual table, with IN, and Changbin, and Seungmin, and Lee Know.
Hyunjin frowned. Right, Han was on bed rest. Would have been great if Hyunjin could take care of him himself. Hyunjin would have skipped school for him, and that says a lot because Hyunjin constantly wishes that he doesn't have to go home.
Hyunjin walked to his own small table at the side, ignoring the clatter of utensils, and laughter and chatter of the students. His stomach hurt and he didn't have any lunch. So he just sat patiently, waiting for Bang Chan to come join him.
He waited for ten minutes.
Hyunjin scowled, Chan wasn't the type to keep you hanging without notice. He would've at least sent a text... What if he was hurt? Hyunjin looked around sitting up a little feeling worried.
Then he saw Chan, running up to him, breathing heavily. "I'm so sorry Hyunjin-ah. I forgot you were waiting for me." Hyunjin gulped unsure of what to do. Chan continued, "I uh, wanted to sit with Seungmin and..." Chan frowned.
Hyunjin sighed with a disappointed expression on his face. He knew Chan and Seungmin liked each other, and he was happy that they were starting to realize that; but Hyunjin really wanted to talk about last night... And maybe steal a bite or two from Chan's lunch. Chan usually shared half of his lunch (his mom gave Chan extras).
Hyunjin mustered up some courage and smiled, "It's ok Bang Chan, go." Chan's face lit up and he smiled, "Thank you Hyunjin. We'll sit together tomorrow, I promise!" Chan ran back to the table with the others and Hyunjin's smile immediately disappeared. Not only was he starving, but he also realized how used to he had gotten sitting with Chan every lunch. When his mom died, he barely ever got lunch for school, and he was fine with that, but Chan started sitting with him and sharing. Slowly that became a daily routine and they would exchange small conversations about their day in general as well. Hyunjin felt dizzy and his eyes burned with something that wasn't tears. Couldn't be tears, he had probably run out of them by now.
Hyunjin scowled at himself and pinched his left hand, feeling the temporary sting of pain thinkin, "Why am I being so selfish! He was nice enough to sit with me when no one would and I can't even be happy when he found someone that makes him happy?"
"Excuse me?" A rough voice snapped Hyunjin out of his thoughts. It was a tall brunette wearing a simple black hoodie and sweatpants. "Can I sit on this table?" He asked and Hyunjin nodded looking down again.
"I'm Min-Joon, nice to meet you Hyunjin." He smirked as Hyunjin raised a brow.
