Jay gets to know Zach

Jay PoV
Jay: pops is it okay if I bring Kaylee and her friend?
Hank: you know you don't have to ask
Jay: I'm gonna pick them up
I left and made my way to the firehouse. I saw someone laying on the floor seizing. I ran over and it was Kaylee. It began to slow down then completely stopped. I rolled her onto her side and just waited for her to come round. Within minutes she was groaning and trying to sit up
Jay: hey honey just stay down for a little longer okay
Kaylee: d-dad
Jay: what are you doing out here?
Kaylee: i I I
She looked at me confused.
Jay: it's okay take your time.
Zach ran outside
Zach: oh my god I should have come out with her. This is my fault
Jay: hey listen kid we can't be with her 24/7.
Zach: she was only going to get her phone.
Kaylee looked at Zach and smiled.
Zach: hey
She tried to sit up so Zach helped her.
Zach: I'll take her to the car
I went into the firehouse to talk to kelly and Matt

Zach pov
I sat in the car and Kaylee laid down with her head on my lap.
Zach: you okay?
Kaylee: mhm tired
Zach: I'll wake you when I'm home
Kaylee: mhm
She fell asleep and I was just scrolling through insta. Jay got in the car and he started driving
Jay: you want anything to eat?
Zach: nah I'm good Cruz made me lunch already.
Jay: as much as I hate to admit it, you're good for her Zach
Zach: thank you mr halstead
Jay: please call me Jay. You want me to drop you home?
Zach: yeah I guess so. I guess after a seizure she's out for hours?
Jay: yep how do you know?
Zach: my sister has epilepsy
Jay: how does it affect her?
Zach: when we were younger the seizures were really bad. She would have about 50 absences a day and she would have like 23 big seizures. She had this medication that would make her angry all the time. It got to the point where I got scared to be around her. I was only 6 and she was 8. Mom had already told me what to expect but it still scared me.
Jay: did her seizures get better?
Zach: yeah she got put onto a different medication and mom also changed her diet. Over the years her seizure decreased and now they happen monthly instead of daily.
We just sat in silence after until I spoke again
Zach: there was this one time she had a seizure in her sleep and stopped breathing. Everyone said she should have died that day. She was 12 when it happened and although her seizures were getting better, when she's ill they're worse. She had a really bad chest infection which triggered the seizure. I remember that night so clear it was easily the worst night of my life. I will never forget mom's screams. I walked into the room and mom was doing CPR. I had to ring for an ambulance. Now even though she's 16, when she's ill she's not allowed by herself. Normally I'll sleep on the floor in her room to make sure she's safe
Jay: she's lucky to have a brother like you. So what you wanna do when you're older?
Zach: I wanna be a police officer or firefighter but I don't think I can do it.
Jay: why not?
Zach: my dad doesn't want me to he thinks I can't because of my ADHD but Kelly told me that ADHD won't be the reason I can't do it. He said he never let it stop him.
Jay: and it won't. I have ADHD and I'm in the best unit.
Zach: you do?
Jay: yep. I had so many people tell me that I'd be a failure. If anything it encouraged me to do better. How about you come to the district one day and you can watch what we do maybe even have a ride along with patrol?
Zach: really? That will be so cool
We got to my house and Jay stopped the car
Zach: thank you mr halstead
I got out the car and went home.

I walked in and mom was sat at the table and Izzy ran upstairs
Zach: what's going on?
Mom: sit down for a second. I need to talk to you
Zach: is it about dad?
Mom: don't get upset okay?
Zach: mom just tell me what's going on
Mom: dad is MIA
Zach: he's missing. When? For how long?
Mom: he's been missing for the last 3 months
Zach: so he's dead?
Mom: we don't know that
I ran up to my room and was throwing all my stuff around the room
Izzy: it's okay. Everything will be okay
She held my hands and pulled me into a tight hug.
Zach: I just want dad to come home
Izzy: I know. I know
She let go and I just slid down the wall onto the floor. Izzy sat down beside me.
Zach: what if he is dead?
Izzy: then we'll get through it. The army are still looking for him which is a good sign. There's no confirmation that he's dead.
Zach: I just want my dad
I just burst out crying and Izzy just held me. After a while I fell asleep on Izzy

Kaylee pov
I woke up and went downstairs.
Dad: hi peach
Kaylee: my head really hurts
Dad: I can give you some painkillers
Kaylee: please
He gave me some and I took them.
Kaylee: dad can I talk to you?
Dad: what's up?
Kaylee: I erm I heard from Monica
Dad: when?
Kaylee: the other day
Dad: she called you?
Kaylee: messaged
Dad: how did she get your number? What did she say?
Kaylee: I don't know but she said it was you keeping her from me and the incident didn't happen like you said.
Dad: why would I lie?
Kaylee: she was saying it to mess with me. But is it bad that I was hoping you were lying and you were the reason she left and not cause she didn't want me.
Dad: no one could blame you for thinking that. She's the one who's missing out. Her loss
Kaylee: mhm. Can we get pizza for dinner?
Dad: sure
We had dinner then went to bed
