AU where Maya and Zatz survive at the end.

All was silent.

It was peaceful to have silence after the battle that just ensued.

That silence lasted for a second.

Maya felt the warm sun on her face, pain burning her whole body. She slowly opened her eyes, only to wince at the bright light.

Was this the land of the dead? She wasn’t expecting it to be so warm and bright. But she was glad it was-

“Maya?”

Maya opened her eyes at Rico’s voice. She saw Chimi and Rico staring down at her, their eyes wide and smile’s broad.

Chimi and Rico were here.

And she was here.

She was alive.

“Chimi? Rico?” Maya silently asked.

“You’re alive.” Chimi said, laughter in her voice, “You’re alive!”

Rico and Chimi slowly helped Maya on her feet. The burning pain in her body was screaming at her to not move, but Maya was too relieved to care, leaning against Chimi for support.

“H-How are you here?” Rico asked, “We thought for sure you were a goner.”

“So did I.” Maya laughed, “I don’t know and I honestly don’t care.”

The trio looked up at the golden lights that shimmered over the Teca kingdom, relief washing over them like a wave.

“He’s gone.” Chimi said.

“You did it, Maya.” Rico said.

“We did it.” Maya said, “We all did our part in this and their sacrifices won’t go in vain.”

Hearing her own words and looking across her kingdom, grief sank into Maya. She knew sacrifices would be made and many would be lost, but that didn’t make the weight of grief any less painful.

Her brothers, her birth mother, Picchu, Zatz. They all gave their lives to defeat Mictlan and they weren’t going to be forgotten.

She held Zatz’s bracelet tightly in her hand, tears welling up her eyes. Chimi noticed this and nudged her, “Hey, it’s ok. Actually, before you woke up, we found another survivor.” She turned to Rico with a knowing smile, “Rico, if you would do the honors?”

“It would be my pleasure.” Rico said. He raised his arms, saying an incantation. A large bubble of peasant magic came into view and was floating towards them.

“We found him not too long ago.” Rico said, “He was in a lot of pain, so we didn’t want to move him.”

“But now that we found you, I don’t think he’d mind the pain.” Chimi said.

“What are you guys talking about?” Maya asked.

“You’ll see.”

The bubble landed in front of them, disappearing the moment it touched the ground, revealing who was inside.

Standing in front of them was someone Maya was sure she’d never see again, her heart stopping and eyes growing wide the moment she saw him.

Zatz.

He was alive!

The second he saw Maya, his eyes grew wide, sharing her disbelief.

For a while, they stared at each other in disbelief, tears flooding their eyes. Just a moment ago, they thought they’d never see each other again. Heck, they thought they were dead a second ago.
