...sliding through the tunnel after Hira. He was grateful for his tunic's padding and his bracers, the slime cut stone less than even as he dove deeper into the tunnels.

Distantly, Link could make out the dark blob of slime that was the chu. It was getting darker the deeper they went, and Link could only make out his direction thanks to Hira's many tails ahead of him.

To his side, the nest of tunnels threatened to send him off track. More than once, a new tunnel would open in a bend, and Link had to kick off the wall in time to keep from being separated from his only guide through this weave.

Eventually, Link tumbled out of the tunnels behind Hira. The Sage was back in his human form, magic glowing off his arms as he raised vertical platforms to block off the tunnels ahead of them.

The acidity of the chu made this not much of a barricade, but Hira did manage to pincher the mass in half, the section with Ryo slipping back into the tunnels as the other half of the chu turned on them.

"No!" Hira shouted, pushing his hands in and the walls he had raised clapping in together against the chu that was left. It squelched as it was squeezed out of the top of Hira's trap. A sharp sizzling chewed its way through the stone as it rolled over and began to advance on Hira and Link.

"Would love some help here, Green!" Hira shouted, before another series of stone slabs shot up from the earth to try and split the chu again.

Link was already moving forward when Hira shouted. While the stone was corroded by the slime, the Master Sword was not. It cut through like hot metal, so thorough Link could hear it the hiss of the cut as he drew the blade out the other side.

Hira's stone was effective though in divide in the chu into smaller chunks. The pieces were easier to cleave now that they were small enough for Link's sword to cut through them, but it also left a number of them behind as they continued to divide.

The number began to thin, which at first Link took only as a good sign. But then he saw droplets of the chu slinking off and dropping into tunnels around them.

"This is a distraction," Link said, mostly to himself as he finished off another chunk of the chu, but Hira seemed to have heard it.

"What?" Hira asked, before following Link's gaze to the disappearing chus. He snarled and punched the air. "And Ryo's getting further away now."

"It'll be weaker when we catch up with it again," Link replied, trying to offer some good news. Even with the blobs that had gotten away, the portion of the chu they had defeated was not insignificant.

"Then we better get moving." Hira slapped Link on the shoulder, before shoving the stone slabs he'd raised back into the ground. Then, he was a fox again and diving down the tunnel the main bulk of chu had left through.

It was easy at first to tell where the main chu had gone. By far, it did the most damage to the tunnel with its trail. After a while though, the tunnels got tighter and darker as they dove even deeper, the scale of the tracks became harder to make out.

Hira seemed sure of himself as he led them deeper in. Link did his best to keep up, not wanting to find out where he'd end up if the two got divided down here.

He almost found out as they passed another intersection of the tunnels. A chunk of the chu lunged out of the dark, and began wrapping itself around his arm.

It was a tight twist getting his sword out and cutting so close to his arm, while still skidding down the tunnel. Having the blade out at all gave Link flashes of a sharp turn gone terribly wrong. But when more of the small chus continued to appear in the passages, he found he didn't have much choice.
