August, 2056

Today, Alex's Son-in-law, German Chancellor Lukas Schmidt was visiting Ottawa on a visit to the North American Union HQ. Still under construction but almost complete Union hall was expected to be completed in September.

"Hallo, Mein Vater" Lukas Said.

Alex notices he referred to him as his father, a honorific title.

"Danke" Alex continued "We have much to discuss" he said to the man nearly 15 years younger than him.

"What did you want to discuss with me?" Lukas questioned.

"I want to congratulate you, I hear there are rumors that you may become an MEP and Leader of the European Social Democratic Party." Alex said.

The rumors had been all over the internet, Lukas had been a successful chancellor but after over 20 years of SPD rule the people of Germany were ready for a change and the CDU had experienced a surge in the polls. The rumor went that Lukas didn't want to be blamed for a humiliating defeat, of course one that wouldn't be his fault and thus had chosen to step aside to run for the European Parliament.

"You will see" said Lukas.

"Is that an admission?" Said Alex.

"You'll see" said Lukas.

"It's time for your speech".

"Ok" said Lukas.

Lukas began:

"I am happy to see the progress of Democratic Values across the North American Continent! We must continue to strive for Democracy all over the world. We have entered an era of relative world peace. Let the peace continue. And our values be upheld! Thank you very much!"

Mass applause broke out and the anthems of both Germany and the Union was played:

"Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit

Für das deutsche Vaterland!

Danach lasst uns alle streben

Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit

Sind des Glückes Unterpfand –

𝄆 Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,

Blühe, deutsches Vaterland! 𝄇"

"This Land is Your land, This land is my land. From the Arctic Tundra,

to the southern isthmus,

From the Redwood Forests, to the Northwest Passage.

This land is made for you and me.

As I was gliding over the cloud top ,

I saw below me,

an endless prairie

This land was made for you and me"
