I can't believe I was really about to do this. That's all that I was thinking about while I trailed behind Preston as we made our way towards the crowd where I could see Jasper chatting it up with Dom and a Hispanic male by a blue Subaru. Well, I guess it was a good thing that Jasper was able to tag along with us today. It was nice to be able to see his smile again even though I wasn't the one to bring it out of him like I always did. Hopefully this would mean that he wasn't going to hate on Preston any longer.

"Dom!" Preston called out so the dark-skinned male would look up. And he did along with Jasper and the Hispanic.

"Well..." Dom questioned as he walked around the Subaru. "Are you getting in there tonight?"

"Yeah," Preston replied.

"Let's go!" Dom exclaimed.

"Are you serious!?" the Hispanic exclaimed as he rushed to stand beside Dom. "You better not be bullshitting."

"I'm not, Alex," Preston said.

"Awesome! Now I can smoke your ass." He pointed at Preston then he pointed at Dom saying, "And your ass."

Preston and Dom both let out a scoff together as if it was impossible. "In your dreams," Preston said.

"I'd like to see you try," Dom added. Now his eyes were on me. "You getting in the passenger seat?"

"Yeah." I don't know why but my eyes locked onto Jasper's when I spoke. "I am."

The stare we gave each other was intense and I couldn't figure out why. It's not like I was doing anything wrong and I'm pretty sure that Jasper was going to be in Dom's car anyways.

"And you're riding with me," Dom said, wrapping his arm behind Jasper's neck.

Exactly.

"Alright let's go!" Alex exclaimed.

I watched him jog over to a silver Nissan, hopping into the driver's seat, immediately starting it up. I turned around but didn't get anywhere because Preston grabbed my wrist and my eyes found his.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"To your car..." my voice trailed off when I began to realize that his personal car wasn't his racing car.

"I don't drive that one for these events," Preston said. "Follow me."

So I did. We walked past the front of the blue Subaru which belonged to Dom. He was sitting in the driver's seat and Jasper was sitting in the passenger seat. They seemed to be lost in a conversation unaware of their surroundings because they didn't look up when Preston and I walked past their car.

"This is my car," Preston said, getting my attention.

It was a clean and polished gray Ford.

"She looks good as new," I said walking to the passenger side of the vehicle.

"I can always trust in these guys to help me out," Preston said in a low tone thinking I wouldn't hear him but I did. I just didn't acknowledge it.

"Ready?" Preston asked.

"I guess so," I said with a nervous grin.

He unlocked the car and we both stepped in the front seats and closed our doors. He started up the car, causing the engine to roar and he pulled out from his spot. Looks like it's time for me to start crossing things off the bucket list.

The bass from the thumping sound system vibrated through the soles of my sneakers, setting the packed concrete lot trembling. Headlights of a dozen cars cast a harsh, industrial glow on the makeshift track where they sat on the sidelines and a web of orange cones delineating the course for tonight's drift showcase. In the center, tires chirped and smoked as a beat-up Nissan tore through a corner, its driver, Preston's friend Alex, a whirlwind of controlled chaos. My knuckles were white-hot against the worn leather of the passenger seat. The world outside the windshield was a blur of people in a big crowd watching as the five of us drifted around the designated area.
