The full hour and a half minute of second period and third period I couldn't stop thinking about what Ryder told me. "Jasper and Makayla didn't break up." "They were kissing in the hallway." Jasper lied to me. But why? I wanted an answer, but I knew trying to get it at school wasn't going to be the smartest thing for me to do. I was hurt. I thought we were closer than that but apparently, I was wrong.

When the bell rang ending third period and starting lunch, I was still trying to pull myself together and get out of my seat. I didn't have my phone so I couldn't text Preston to wait for me at the end of the hallway. So, I was hoping that time would line up so we could hopefully run into each other on our way. After telling my third period teacher I'll see him tomorrow I made my way through the hallway.

It wasn't as crowded as I thought it was going to be but that was a sign to let me know that I was in that classroom for a long time. As I neared the end of the hallway, I let out a sigh of relief when I saw Preston standing by the doors, scanning the crowd like he was actually looking for me. I began to pick up my pace but slowed down out of instinct when I heard my name being called from behind me. But not just my name.

"Ash!"

My nickname. A nickname that belonged to...

"Why are you walking so fast?" Jasper asked me once he caught up with me then slung his arm around my neck.

"Yeah," Sophia chuckled on the other side of me. "It's not like the cafeteria food is going anywhere."

"Besides the trash," Ryder added, causing the three of them to laugh together.

I still had my eyes on Jasper, but he was too busy looking ahead to even notice that my eyes were on him. But I got the feeling that I wasn't the only one looking at him.

"Mr. Tattoo's looks lost," Jasper said then he turned his head back to me, but I quickly looked away, locking my eyes on Preston.

"He's not," I said.

"Mr. Tattoos?" I heard Sophia ask but no one replied to that.

"There you are," Preston said once the four of us got to the end of the hallway. "I was going to text you but then I remembered... we don't have our phones."

"That's why you weren't responding to my text," Jasper said under his breath.

He texted me?

"Why don't you guys have your phones?" Ryder asked.

"First period teacher-"

"Introductions," I said, letting out a nervous laugh cutting off Preston (not on purpose). "Fun but also a waste of time. We could catch up later instead of missing our lunch."

"You're right so let's go," Jasper said, nearly dragging me with him.

I felt a sudden burst of strength hit me, causing me to step out from under his arm so I was standing beside Preston. "You guys go ahead," I said.

"You're not coming with us?" Sophia asked.

"No," I replied and even though I was talking to her my eyes were still locked on Jasper. "I'll be with Preston."

"Well, we're all going to the cafeteria," Ryder pointed out. "Might as well walk together."

"They're not," Jasper said in a stern tone.

"So..."

"I don't eat in the cafeteria," Preston informed them.

"Oh."

Ryder and Sophia both looked at each other around Jasper who was standing in the middle of them. Our eye contact was intense and neither one of us was planning on backing down. I don't know why it had to be this way, but it was. Jasper lied to me for no good reason. Or maybe he did have a reason, but it wasn't going to be one worth listening to.
