On the third day after the interview, Ren Meng finally let go.
As anticipated, Ren Meng's resignation was like quietly slipping away in muddy waters. However, he inadvertently stumbled upon a minefield, making it impossible for him to retreat completely without either sinking into the mud or enduring a broken leg for survival.
Ren Meng provided intermittent explanations, followed the leads, and conducted targeted investigations. Yisi, with its clear surface like a pristine lake, would inevitably reveal some dirt at the bottom when disturbed even a little.
After years of long-standing malpractices, what was exposed went beyond the problems in one department. Kickbacks, bribery, irregular project operations... countless issues, both big and small, lay hidden beneath the whitewash.
Some responsible individuals had already left their positions, and it would require manpower and time to trace back their activities. In the conference room, Chu Zhichen sat pensively, deep in thought.
However, Ren Meng didn't mention anything about Li Zangqiu.
The connection between the two parties was deep, holding each other back. This was undoubtedly the result of being dragged down.
The door opened and Director Jiang entered, placing a stack of files on the table. "Secretary Chu, here are the documents you requested."
Chu Zhichen nodded, expressing his gratitude. He had requested all the personnel files of Yisi from the past five years. Glancing at his watch, he realized it was nearly time to leave for the day. He said, "Everyone has worked hard these past few days. Go home and rest early."
The expansive meeting room was well-lit, with a long table in the center filled with a sea of papers scattered across the table, their black and white words resembling cryptic puzzles impossible to decipher.
Chu Zhichen chose to stay behind and continue his search. Half an hour later, his phone rang.
It was a message from Chu Shihui, asking what time he would return home from work.
During this period, Chu Shihui had been preoccupied with final exams and resided in the school dormitory. Based on the dates, her exams were likely over. Chu Zhichen wasn't particularly fond of his sister's solicitousness, so he packed up his materials and prepared to leave work.
In the Chu family's garden, a convertible sports car was parked, indicating the presence of visitors.
Inside the villa's large and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the lush gardens dining area, several boxes of takeaway crayfish were spread across the table.
The crayfish were a deep red color, and they glistened in the light. They were accompanied by a variety of sauces, including garlic butter, lemon pepper, and spicy chili.
Chu Shihui went to wash her hands, while Mrs. Chu and Sister Xiu argued in the kitchen about how long the soup should be stewed for.
At the table, Li Heng was helping arrange the dishes.
Since their last encounter at the Meijin Building, they hadn't seen each other for a while. Chu Zhichen greeted Li Heng, "Why are you having the guests do the work?"
Li Heng smiled and replied, "It's no trouble. I just finished work."
Chu Zhichen acknowledged with a hum and asked, "Why didn't Uncle Li come along?"
Li Hang responded, "He had other engagements."
Chu Zhichen went upstairs to tidy up and freshen up. On his way back down, everyone had started eating together. The table was filled with spicy and flavorful crayfish. Chu Zhichen didn't want to get his hands dirty, so he filled a bowl with soup instead.
