Xiang Mingzhang, who has made a swift recovery and now only has a few minor bruises that do not hinder his daily activities, received the doctor's approval to return to Bomanjia's apartment and pack up before heading to the company.
In the week following the design exhibition, Xiang Mingzhang and Shen Ruozhen seemed to have disappeared, causing speculation among their colleagues. However, most people assumed that they were on a temporary business trip rather than considering the possibility of a kidnapping case.
Xiang Mingzhang made a sudden appearance at the office building, almost as if his superiors were conducting a surprise inspection. This caught the attention of the directors and supervisors from various departments.
Seizing the opportunity, he called for a meeting to discuss the accumulated and pending matters before proceeding to the R&D center for a tour.
By chance, he ran into Zhou Kesen.
The Ningli Medicine project required urgent implementation, so Zhou Kesen halted Xiang Mingzhang and asked directly, "Mr. Xiang, is Shichen with you?"
Xiang Mingzhang replied, "Yes, are you looking for him?"
"I've been trying to reach him for days," Zhou Kesen expressed his worries. "I contacted his mother in New Zealand, but she had no knowledge of his whereabouts and mentioned that he was with you."
Although Xiang Mingzhang appeared calm and composed, his explanation did not sound convincing. "He was helping me, but unfortunately, his phone broke down."
Zhou Kesen's concern grew as he questioned, "So, where is he now? Is he okay?"
Having been through a kidnapping and gunshot injury, Xiang Mingzhang couldn't simply say "I'm fine" and responded, "I'll ask him to call you later."
Zhou Kesen felt slightly reassured by this and was about to ask a few more questions when Xiang Mingzhang abruptly left with his bags full of documents, signaling that he wouldn't be back for several days.
Meanwhile, in the hospital ward, Shen Ruozhen lay tired on the bed, propped up by a raised pillow. Bored, he gazed outside through the glass window.
Xiang Mingzhang had hired three individuals for Shen Ruozhen's care: a bodyguard, a professional nurse to tend to his daily needs, and a chef responsible for preparing nutritious meals. When Xu Liao dropped by, they could even play mahjong together.
Shen Ruozhen remained in a daze for a while before the door to the ward opened. Xiang Mingzhang, wearing a casual outfit without a tie and donning a pair of thin-rimmed glasses to conceal the remaining bruises around his eyes, entered with a bag full of documents and a computer bag.
Placing the bags down, Xiang Mingzhang entered the treatment room with a box of desserts he had bought on the way. He said, "I'm here to keep you company."
Envious, Shen Ruozhen exclaimed, "Did you go to the company today?"
Pulling the small table closer to the bed, Xiang Mingzhang replied, "I went to Xiangyue Communications for a meeting. There's so much work to be done, and I can't finish it all in one go. I decided to work remotely from the hospital instead."
Shen Ruozhen suggested, "I'm feeling much better now. You don't have to stay with me every day."
Knowing how to exaggerate, Xiang Mingzhang responded, "If I'm gone for half a day, you'll go crazy, just like Wangfushi. If I'm away for a whole day, what would happen if your condition suddenly worsens?"
Shen Ruozhen countered, "Please don't jinx me."
As an apology, Xiang Mingzhang opened the dessert box, revealing freshly baked garland puffs. They were warm and adorned with chocolate chips and nuts.
