Even during the Spring Festival, Manzhuang remained unchanged, maintaining its peaceful and serene atmosphere that stood apart from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
In the evening, Xiang Mingzhang changed into fresh attire and drove to Chu Zhichen's house to pick him up. They refrained from mentioning the earlier farce at Jingpu Mansion during their journey.
Chu Zhichen was not particularly curious about the history of the Xiang family or the whereabouts of Xiang Long. What he truly desired to understand was Xiang Mingzhang's genuine sentiments towards Xiang Long, Xiang Xingzhao, and the "family" that had coexisted with him for many years yet felt estranged.
And if they were to discuss the disputes within the Xiang family, it would be inevitable to address Bai Yongti. Therefore, Chu Zhichen would not initiate such inquiries.
Upon arriving at Manzhuang, he spoke up, "Does Auntie know the purpose of my visit?"
"Well, I informed her," replied Xiang Mingzhang.
The courtyard gate stood open as Chu Zhichen stepped out of the car, picking up the gift. When Xiang Mingzhang reached out to assist, he politely declined, saying, "It's alright, I'd rather carry it myself."
Xiang Mingzhang asked, "Are you planning to flaunt it in front of my mother?"
Chu Zhichen responded, "Is the intention to play tricks too evident?"
Xiang Mingzhang jested, observing the seriousness on Chu Zhichen's face, which made him feel cared for. He remarked, "You're about to expose your true thoughts. Those infatuated with you are fools, and those who silently offer support are foolish."
As they walked through the circular corridor, Chu Zhichen commented, "Then you are the most cunning. You speak softly and sweetly, and also resort to intimidation. You've covered all your bases and expect rewards with interest. Your contributions are never in vain."
"I never come out empty-handed," Xiang Mingzhang admitted. "And besides, you are so poised. If I were to be equally dignified, perhaps by the time I catch up to you, my little niece would already be an adult."
Chu Zhichen smiled softly, halting outside the living room. Every time he entered the house, he had a habit of straightening his clothes. But today, with his hands occupied, he merely tilted his chin up at Xiang Mingzhang.
The shadows of their figures stretched across the living room carpet. Xiang Mingzhang straightened Chu Zhichen's collar. Upon entering, Miss Qing hurried over and exclaimed, "Mr. Xiang, Mr. Chu."
Chu Zhichen wasn't embarrassed by the familiarity. During the few days he had stayed in the southern district, he had often relied on Sister Qing's cooking. To her, he might have appeared lazy and gluttonous. He handed over the gift and said, "Happy Chinese New Year, with a small token of appreciation."
Sister Qing responded cheerfully, "I also have a share. Mr. Chu has been very generous."
The living room held seven or eight candlesticks, and the sofa cushions had been replaced with finely embroidered ones. The only constant was Bai Yongti, who remained herself, devoid of makeup but exuding undeniable beauty, with her captivating features and delicate skin.
Xiang Mingzhang announced, "Mom, I've brought Zhichen with me."
Chu Zhichen had visited Manzhuang several times before and had shared various experiences with Xiang Mingzhang. However, he hadn't interacted much with Bai Yongti and remained distant, maintaining the proper boundaries between host and guest.
During his previous visits, Chu Zhichen had acted as Xiang Mingzhang's secretary. But this time, the purpose of his visit had completely changed, leaving him feeling a bit nervous.
