YOUR POV:
Everyone left me for me Lucas to talk in private. I was surprised, Lucas was alive! But the other part of me couldn't help but feel bad. The man had no clue.
"Did you come from B06-32..?" Lucas asks, with a slight pleading tone.
I nod.
He began to shake, "is he alive?"
I nod again.
He suddenly begins to cry, "thank goodness." He wipes his eyes, "I apologize for getting so worked up."
"No, no, no! Don't apologize!" I say, "you have nothing to apologize for." I hesitated, "uh, if it's not...insensitive to ask, are you the only...?"
He nods, "I was the only one who survived. At the time, I didn't know if I was going to make it. I was able to buy him sometime and he ran off. That was when someone I didn't know, showed up and saved me." He takes a breath, "she said she had been in hiding. So, she took me in. I think the poachers thought I ran away with him, and so, I became someone who didn't exist."
I couldn't help but frown at his story, how awful it must have felt to go from little freedom to none over night.
"And your savior?"
"Dead."
Silence.
"That's why I want to shut this place down! I'll never forget the poachers! But since I was injured, I gathered some kids." Lucas explains, "I taught them skills, gave them information, helped them prepare. But I found it, the reason Minerva invited us here."
He gestures me over to a wall and presses one of the stones, my eyes widened as the stone went inward. "There's a secret passage way that connects the windmill and the forest."
The wall opens up with a set of stairs as I follow Lucas inside. "There's a door, but it's locked. You have a pen, right?"
I nod.
We walk down the dark and dreary hallway, and stumble across a door at the end that has Minerva's owl symbol on it.
I pulled the pen out of my pocket, "you're lucky I have this on me." I open the pen as a click is heard beyond the door.
We open the door and find a room of monitors, but also a temperature gauge, water and electricity. "It's a control room," I comment as I spot another door. I walk over to it as it slides open, "Lucas, over here!"
Beyond the door was a golden pond with a small floating building in the middle.
"Is this possibly...Goldy Pond?" Lucas asks aloud.
"Maybe we were invited here and not the hunting grounds," I admit, "assuming this place was here before it was a hunting spot."
Lucas bends down and places his hands into the water and pulls it out, but his hands aren't wet. "You can't touch the water," Lucas states.
I nod and point to the floating building, "as cool as like...fake water is, I am much more interested in that building."
The two of head travel through the water and arrive at the building. The door was already unlocked when we got there, so we went inside. In the middle was an elevator, and off to the left side was a desk and telephone.
"This place is creepy as hell," I mutter under my breath. I noticed a keypad in front of the elevator as I walked over to it. Once again, the owl symbol with a Morse code and a slot for something to go.
I stared at the Morse code and blinked before looking at Lucas, "I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea what this says."
"It says pen. Use the pen."
I take the pen out place it into the slot, it fit perfectly as I smiled. I gave the pen a small turn as the room began to shake. Then, the elevator doors opened.
"It works?" Lucas says.
That was when the telephone rang, startling the two of us. We looked at each other before rushing toward the telephone. I picked it up and set the phone between us so we could both hear the call.
"Hello? This is William Minerva."
My eyes widened.
"I believe that you are an escapee. I am sorry. That elevator used to go between this world and the human world, but not anymore."
I couldn't help but glance at the elevator doors that were still open. It's a shame that freedom was so close to us, and just within our grasp.
"I do not know what year or month it is right now. But the fact you are listening to this means that the elevator is broken. It's all my fault. I didn't think the one I trusted the most would betray me. The settlement I made is probably no longer safe. I wanted to atone."
Atone? I wonder, for what?
"My real name is James Ratri. I am the descendant of the one who made the promise all those centuries ago. I am the 35th head of the Ratri Clan. For all these years, it has been my family who has forced you children to stay here...I now see that it was wrong."
At least he feels bad and understands how wrong this all is.
"I can't guarantee you a future, that's why I began to use a pen name—William Minerva. I left clues for children to pick up on, and created a safe hold for them...as well as a secret route into the human world."
I couldn't help but frown, this whole time we've been chasing after a make believe person. Especially Emma.
"It's currently May 20th of 2031. By the time you are hearing this, I am probably already dead. They won't be to kill me easily, and again, I'm sorry. But there are other elevators into the human world."
What?
"Grace Field, Glory Bell, Grand Valley and Goodwill Ridge, they all have a path and won't be blocked. Choose the future that you want. If you go to the human world, I will have supporters meet you." He pauses, "or, you could destroy the promise...I won't stop you. Though that may result in a whole war. But I won't stop you...and if that isn't what you want, look for the Seven Walls."
"The Seven Walls..?" Lucas and I ask.
"I don't have much time left. The rest are in Marvine's Bed. Everything you need will be there. I'm sure you have suffered a lot, and yet here you are listening to my call. I'm not sure how many are listening. I wanted to see you all and hear your voices...there's happiness out there, you just have to obtain it. I wish you luck."
Click!
I put the phone down once the call ended.
"This is great news," Lucas begins, "once we ruin this place, we can all escape to the human world."
I nod, "yeah, and Marvine's Bed..."
I should have paid more attention to Emma and Ray when they were filling me in on these stories, especially Ray. Ugh!
I slid open the drawers of the desk, but they were empty. Lucas and I began to inspect every nook and cranny of the desk, until I find a small disk behind the drawers. I grabbed it and pulled it out, showing it to Lucas.
"What is that?" He asks.
"I think it's for the pen." I grab the pen and switch out the toppers, then twist the pen open as the screen appears with brand new information.
"There's so much information..!" I gasp as Lucas and I glance at each piece of information. Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming.
"Project Lambda 7214?" I read aloud as I click on the document. The document gave information on an experimental farm, I couldn't help but be disgusted.
"I finally tell the kids the full truth," Lucas smiles, "we can go to the human world!"
