~Ava~

She knew the angel was not her dad as soon as she met his intense gaze. His eyes were those of a stranger, with none of the warmth and kindness she seen in her memory. He wore a pressed a loose grey shirt and dark blue jeans, the most un-angelic sort of outfit Ava could imagine. If she didn't know any better, he could've just been a man.

Immediately on guard, Ava backed away. She sunk into a fighting stance on her last step and focused on drawing the Halo's power to the palms of her hands. She would fight like hell to be free.

Nothing happened.

"If you are trying to pull the Power, it won't work." The angel said quietly, almost gently, as he stepped further into the room.

The low hum from before disappeared the entrance, leaving Ava trapped. She moved back further, getting as far away from both the angel and Halo as she possibly could.

"Ava, it's okay..." Halo wore a pained expression as they started in Ava's direction.

"Stay there!" Ava commanded, hands tightening into fists, not taking her eyes off the angel.

"Relax, niece." The angel sighed and did something she really wasn't expecting. Without so much as a glance down he sank gracefully to the ground, sitting cross-legged, in front of her. "My name is Uriel, it's a pleasure to finally meet you."

"Umm..." Ava blinked, still stuck on what he'd just said. "Niece?"

Uriel smiled and, from what she could see, it was entirely genuine. "Yes, Gabriel is my brother."

"Brother...?" Ava's voice was weak. She lifted a shaky hand to run through her hair, a soothing habit in the moment.

Uriel tilted his head, eyebrows furrowed, before turning towards Halo. "Has she sustained a head injury? I can bring Raphael...?"

"It's fine," Halo hadn't taken their eyes off Ava the entire time, "she's just surprised. She didn't know about Gabriel's brothers."

Brothers?

"There's more?" Ava pressed her back against the wall behind her. "I have uncles?"

"Several." Uriel's smile was back. "We are a large family. You'll get to meet more of us later."

"Oh, great." She tried for sarcasm but didn't quite get there.

"Anyway, let's get down to business." Uriel clapped his hands. "I've been sent to interview you before we proceed with the trial, I have a skill for reading people to determine their true motives and desires and such..." The angel waved nonchalantly, like he hadn't just told Ava he was some sort of fucking mentalist. "So, tell me, who is Ava Silva?"

She was gaping again; she couldn't help it. This was a lot, a hell of a lot, and her mind practically spun with questions, but one in particular stood out as more urgent than the others. "What trial?"

"You will be brought before the Council to answer for your crimes."

"Crimes?!" Fury rose in Ava's chest, and she embraced it. The rage helped to quell the confusion, giving her a stunning clarity. "All I did was fucking exist!"

"Ava..." There was a warning in Halo's voice, but it only pissed her off more.

"Is this why you separated us?" Ava accused, spinning around to face them. "You didn't want me to escape justice?"
