~Ava~

Despite her extensive travelling around Europe, Ava had never been on an actual plane before. Well, maybe she had as a kid, but if that was the case the Halo bearer couldn't remember it.

Everything about the Madrid Barajas airport was exciting, from the dozens of giftshops to the fruit-sniffing dogs wandering around (which Bea had had to drag her away from), Ava was enthralled.

Fascinated, she rested her chin on Bea's shoulder while she checked them in with the attendant at the desk, retrieving their boarding passes before loading their suitcase onto the conveyor belt that disappeared into the back of the building. Even the process of getting through aviation security captivated Ava. She was maybe a little too captivated, her attempts to see what was passing through the x-ray machine and millions of questions earning her a pat down from one officer, much to everyone's embarrassment.

It was only once she was standing at the gate waiting to board that Ava began to feel anxious. It started out pretty tame, just a little uncomfortable prickling across her skin pulling goosebumps to the surface. But the feeling grew and grew, lodging a heavy ball of dread in her gut. Ava did her best to ignore it, it was stupid to be nervous, thousands of people flew every single day, right? Fidgeting with the strap of her carry-on, she glanced over to the restrooms where Bea had disappeared a couple of minutes ago, wishing her fiancé would hurry. Bea's presence always helped her feel safe.

"What's wrong with you?"

Ava bit her lip, watching a distant plane land out the window and instantly wishing she hadn't. The bouncing impact of the wheels on the tar seal made her feel sick. Why the hell had she agreed to flying to London again?

I haven't flown before.

"Yes, you have..."

Not in a plane I haven't.

She really didn't understand why she was scared; her job was to literally fight demons and flew, regularly, with her own set of wings...

"It'll be fine Ava; you have more chances of being in a car crash than a plane crash...oh..."

Ava rolled her eyes at Halo's weak attempt to reassure her.

Yea that's not really helpful.

"You good kid?" Mary asked, having sidled up beside her when she wasn't paying attention.

"Oh yeah, just peachy." Ava replied, trying to be nonchalant only for her voice to come out higher pitched than usual.

"She's scared of flying." Lilith muttered without looking up from whatever she was doing on her phone.

"I am not!" Ava snapped, offended, "I just haven't been on a plane before..."

Mary nodded like that made perfect sense, giving her a supportive nudge with her shoulder, "Lots of people get nervous their first time, nothing wrong with that."

"Who's nervous?"

Ava smiled, turning to Bea and reaching for her hand with a small sigh of relief. The contact immediately helped soothe the Halo bearer's fraught nerves.

"Ava." Lilith said bluntly, a little smirk emerging on her lips even though she still didn't look up, "She's scared of flying."

"I'm not fucking scared of flying!"
