~Ava~

The apartment was completely dark when Ava let herself in.

She closed the door behind her. With the lamp from the hall no longer bathing the room, the only light filtered through the partially open blinds in the kitchen. Tilting her head, Ava listened carefully for any noise, but there was only silence.

"Bea?" She called into the stillness.

Nothing. Her heart rate started to pick up.

Halo?

"I'm here."

Where's Bea?

"Couldn't say."

Ava folded her arms, Does that mean you don't know, or you know and don't want to tell me?

It was answer enough when Halo didn't reply. She let out a frustrated huff.

Ugh, Halo! Are you serious? She was whining like a child now, What happened to no more secrets?

"That was a low blow, Ava." There was a hint of amusement in Halo's response, "You know I'm not allowed to give you hints."

Fine... but for the record, I hate this.

Steeling herself with a deep breath, Ava took a tentative step forward into the apartment's living room. The floor creaked ominously under the toe of her boot.

She froze, wincing.

There goes the element of surprise...

"Did you ever have the element of surprise?"

Shut up.

Out of nowhere, a dark shape sprung towards her, the air leaving her lungs in a rush as she was tackled to the carpet in front of the lounge suite. Adrenaline flooding her bloodstream, Ava's arms instinctively wrapped with the body of the assailant, grappling frantically as she tried to flip them.

After a moment or two of wrestling, her opponent gained the advantage, and Ava found herself pinned to the floor. With her wrists secured firmly above her head, she looked up into Bea's smiling face.

"Not fair." She pouted, not bothering to try a wriggle free.

Bea chuckled at that; Ava felt the rumble of it against her chest.

This little 'game' had become a semi-regular occurrence in order to test Ava's control over her powers. Since being back in touch with Halo, she hadn't had any more accidental transformations, but it still hung over her head constantly, a source of stress that kept the Halo bearer awake most nights. So, Bea had taken it upon herself to prove to Ava just how much control she actually had.

"What's not fair?"

Ava's pout deepened, "You hid the Halo link from me again... how do you even do that?"

Bea's smile faded like a cloud covering up the sun, "I worked out how in London, when I..."

Ava felt a pang of guilt, and quickly tried to distract her fiancé from those dark thoughts, "Well, I think it gives you an unfair advantage..." She said teasingly, hoping it wouldn't fall flat.

But Bea just seemed relieved by the redirection of the conversation.

"Oh, does it now?" Her smile was back as she raised an eyebrow, "I think even if I didn't use it, I would've won."
