~Ava~

"AVA!"

She didn't have a clue what was happening, the surge of fear through the Halo link coupled with Bea's shout into her head sent a powerful but disorientating rush of adrenaline thundering through Ava's veins. The onslaught of panic brought her wings forth in a violent burst, shoving those closest to her away.

Chaos erupted at the bar with the appearance of her feather appendages, the civilians in the restaurant screaming and running from the sudden winged person among them. In the midst of all the mayhem, Ava couldn't help but feel a little disappointed, she really liked this place, bloody typical she wouldn't be able to show her face here again.

Her eyes darted around the room, searching for Bea, to make sure she was safe, only to realize the sister warrior wasn't in danger at all. Instead, her fiancé's gaze was fixed on something behind Ava and the pure horror in the taller woman's expression was enough to make her blood run cold.

What's she...?

"Ava, look out!"

Halo's warning had Ava spinning around, instinctually lifting her snow-white wing to shield herself, and just in time...

The Halo bearer caught the glint of the luminescent blue blade slicing through the air towards her chest. Maybe it was the champagne that slowed her reflexes down, or it could have been her fiancé's immobilizing panic, but in that moment Ava couldn't move. A myriad of powers at her fingertips, and she couldn't do a goddamn thing.

The knife slid through the centre of the feathery appendage with little resistance, and it was excruciating, her connection to both the Halo and Bea severed in an instance. Strangely enough, Ava's wings stayed despite the loss of Halo power, the embedded cerulean keeping them firmly attached to this realm.

Through the blur of pain and confusion, Ava could see another blade whistling towards her.

Oh. Fuck.

The Halo bearer staggered backwards, a ringing in her ears as the agony of her stabbed wing clouded her thoughts. Her attacker followed, slashing the air with his weapon. Ava knew she was in trouble but was too dazed to do anything but scrabble away.

I can't die at my own engagement party! That's so not fair!

Suddenly, firm hands grabbed her right arm, yanking her out of the path of the blade and away from the enemy.

"Get her out of here! We got this." Ava recognized Mary's voice through the noise.

A different hand curled around her elbow, and the suffocating feeling of teleportation swept over her.

Gasping in a harsh breath, the Halo bearer blinked rapidly when she materialised. Staring up at the ceiling, Ava could tell she was still in the restaurant. Bea appeared in her field of vision, face tight with concern. Her mouth moved, obviously saying her name, but Ava was deafened by the ringing in her head.

"Take it out." She whispered, tears stinging at her eyes, her wing flopped weakly on the floor beside her.

But Bea couldn't hear her over the racket surrounding them, her eyebrows pinched together in confusion.

"Take it out! Please!" Ava cried as loud as her breathless voice could go.

Realisation flashed in the sister warrior's eyes, and without wasting any more time Bea wrapped her hand in one of the cloth napkins from the table to protect her from the cerulean and grasped the hilt of the knife, wrenching it from Ava's wing.

The reconnection was instant and almost as painful as the severance; thankfully the agony faded relatively quickly. Ava groaned in relief and disappeared her wings, making it easier to move in the confined space.
