~Mary~

"I still don't understand why we have to go." Lilith grumbled darkly.

"Because you're the one who has the best chance at stopping either of the two lovebirds from murdering Bea's parents..." Mary replied smoothly without looking up from what she was doing, "... and I go where you go." Lilith snorted incredulously and Mary couldn't help but smirk, "Okay, okay and I'm going to keep things civil between you and Ava."

"Since when did I become their personal bodyguard?"

Mary sighed, putting down the packing list she had been going over for their impromptu trip to London in the morning.

She turned towards her girlfriend who was sitting cross-legged beside the open suitcase, "They're our friends babe, we help our friends."

Lilith muttered something under her breath, picking at her talons like she always did when something was bothering her. Mary figured most of Lilith's bad mood was due to what happened at the Vatican a couple of days ago. They still hadn't talked about it, though not for lack of trying on Mary's part. Every time she tried to bring it up Lilith would shut her down, distract her or just outright leave the room.

She really needs to just get it off her chest...

"Hey, Lil?" Mary implored softly, trying to get her the winged woman to look at her.

Lilith tensed, knowing Mary's change in tone all too well. She shuffled off the bed to make her escape, but Mary quickly knelt down in front of her placing a gentle hand on each knee, holding her in place. Lilith froze at Mary's touch but kept her eyes cast downward.

Mary brushed her thumbs in small circles against Lilith's smooth skin, "Lilith, look at me, please?"

A long moment passed in stalemate, neither woman giving in until finally Lilith sighed, raising her dark eyes, "What?"

Mary smiled despite the unfriendly tone, "Are you okay?"

Lilith winced at the question, her gaze darting around the room before settling back on Mary, she swallowed nervously, "I... I don't think so..."

It was barely a whisper, but she could hear how the words trembled slightly, Mary squeezed Lilith's knees, "Can you tell me why?"

Lilith was shaking her head before Mary could even finish the question, shutting down once again.

Mary frowned softly, leaning her cheek against the hand resting on Lilith's right knee, "Please try baby girl, I want to help..." She appealed, turning just enough to press her lips to the inside of her girlfriend's thigh.

Lilith choked off a small sob and reached out to cup Mary's cheek, "Can you...can you come up here?"

"Of course." Mary agreed easily, letting herself be drawn up to sit on the bed as well.

Retracting her talons, Lilith carefully took Mary's hand and interlaced their fingers. Mary leaned into her side, bringing their intertwined hands onto her lap and waited.

"I can't get what they said out of my head."

Mary tried not to react even though she was still absolutely fuming about what the Vatican officials had done to Lilith. Mother Superior had promised to speak to the Church about Lilith's situation, but Mary knew the politics of it all well enough to know that nothing would come of the so-called discussion.
