"May I inquire as to what brought you here?" he asked, his tone stern.
"I...uh, I had a meeting," I replied, avoiding his gaze.
"Oh? I wasn't aware that my company allowed interns to attend meetings," he scoffed, moving closer.
I glanced at him, feeling the need to confess something.
"Tell me the truth," he insisted.
"I had..." I began, but the proximity between us was driving me insane.
However, I knew I had to say something.
"What were you doing with a guy like that?" he questioned.
"He's not a bad person, we just had a meet-up," I said, trying to avoid his eyes. He snarked in response.
"So now you're going on dates?" he asked, his gaze filled with an unfamiliar emotion.
"Well, technically, you were on one too," I retorted.
"How do you know?" he scrutinized my face.
"Your table was quite close to ours, so I happened to overhear," I said, biting my tongue.
"Wait a minute, you came to the same restaurant as me, with a date no less, sat close to our table, and eavesdropped? Isn't that too coincidental to be a mere accident?" he questioned, and I looked away.
How did he figure it out so quickly?
He sighed, a smile playing on his lips, then stepped back, his gaze fixed on me, making me feel exposed despite being fully clothed. I pulled his coat closer around me.
"What did you tell Miss Bhatt before leaving?" he asked, hands in his pockets.
"I said I was leaving for lunch," I replied, staring at the ground.
"Alright, get in the car. I'll take you home. You don't need to go back to the office," he said, getting into the car. I stood there in shock but eventually got inside.
"But I still need to..." I started, but he started the car.
"I'll handle it," he said, and we drove off.
"You know, what you did back there wasn't the best move," he mentioned, glancing at me briefly before returning his focus to the road. "You shouldn't just bring along any random guy to help you out on a mission."
"I didn't bring him along, I was actually on my way back to the company when he showed up out of nowhere," I explained.
"Well, you should have been more cautious," he advised.
''But he had a thing for Gina, and...'" I stopped myself mid-sentence, realizing I was revealing too much. Was I giving myself away?
''It's alright, I already had a feeling about why you were there,'' he reassured me with a smile.
''That's not how it was,'' I protested, feeling my cheeks flush.
''I believe you, and I trust you. I believe everything you say,'' he said, glancing at me briefly before returning his gaze to the road.
After this car ride, I need to splash my face with ice-cold water. My face was burning with embarrassment.
After being dropped off, I couldn't relax at all. Instead, I kept replaying the whole restaurant debacle in my head in excruciating detail.
I was practically giving myself a headache imagining every little thing from a third-person perspective. It got to the point where I felt like I was banging my head against a wall no matter what I was doing - eating, reading, you name it.
