Hours had passed since Lily had returned with Sutton, her heart heavy with the knowledge that Sophia was still out there, alone. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the highway where the group had camped. Rick and Daryl had been out searching for Sophia, but the day's fading light forced them to return with the painful news.
Lily's heart ached as she watched Carol's face crumble when the two men came back empty-handed. Carol had been waiting, clinging to a thread of hope that her daughter might be found. The anguish on Carol's face was gut-wrenching, and Lily felt a rising tide of guilt. Despite the fact that Sutton had returned safely, the thought of Sophia alone in the woods gnawed at her.
"Her trail went cold," Rick said, his voice heavy with regret. "We'll pick it up again at first light."
Lily's chest tightened at the thought of Sophia spending the night in the woods, vulnerable and scared. The darkness seemed to amplify her fears.
"You can't leave my daughter out there on her own," Carol cried out, her voice breaking with desperation. "To spend the night alone in the woods, with all that's out there..."
Lily stood beside Carol, feeling her anguish deeply. "We won't. I won't. If you two are done searching, I'll go," she said firmly, her resolve hardened by the weight of the situation.
"Not in the dark. You'd just get yourself lost," Daryl countered, his voice laced with concern.
"But she's twelve! She can't survive out there alone. Did you find anything at all?" Carol pleaded, her eyes wide and desperate.
Rick placed a hand on Carol's shoulder, trying to calm her. "I know this is hard, but we need to stay calm. We know she was out there. We tracked her for a while, but it's not safe to continue in the dark."
"Are you saying I should just wait while Sophia is out there alone? That's not right," Lily said, frustration and fear boiling over. She tried to push past Daryl, but he stepped in her path, his face set in a firm expression.
"What about Sutton? You just gonna leave her here?" he asked, his voice a mix of frustration and concern.
"I know where Sutton is. She's here and she's safe. But how is it fair that Carol can't say the same for her child?" Lily's voice cracked, the weight of her words evident.
"It's not fair," Daryl admitted. "But if you go out there alone at night, you're just as likely to get yourself killed."
"So you think Sophia has a better chance out there than I do?" Lily challenged, her anger and fear mingling. Daryl's silence spoke volumes. Shaking her head, she turned and walked back to Sutton, guiding her into the RV to find something for her to eat.

The next morning, Rick laid out a selection of knives Carl had found in a car. The group prepared for the search with renewed determination, each member tasked with different responsibilities.
